Windows XP automatic updates
I have Windows XP and a dial up connection and have found that almost everytime I've connected to the internet recently Windows commences a new automatic download. Have other Windows XP users noticed this or is it just me? Is it normal to be getting so many automatic updates? Its annoying when I'm using a filesharing program because it slows down my (already crap) internet connection, but I don't want to cancel it incase they're important updates.

The Big Cat
Click on Contol Panel/System/Automatic Updates.........
Either disable it or put it on Notify.........
I have had XP for about a week now and haven't even gotten 1 notification yet. I had to go to the site and download 15 updates myself. Do not download the WMP Security Update, it can disable some programs.

Thanks, I'll remember that. Are the updates not really that important then?

Some of the updates help protect against security holes, hackers and such. So sometimes they can be helpful.

sometimes helpful/vital. but watch out for that media player update. DO NOT DOWNLOAD. alters EULA and allows m$ to download stuff to your comp that will not allow you to open copyrighted files and a whole bunch of other stuff

I was stupid enough to install the WMP update, i run XP. I cannot find a way to uninstall this. It is not shown on Add/Remove progs and i cant find a way of uninstalling the media player itself.
Will uninstalling WMP solve my problem? I have to disable this update.
Someone please help before I go on a vigilante mission and shove Bill Gates head up his arse
