    can't resolve hosts - help!

since three days i'm having the problem that my internet connection behaves in a really weird way... i am using windows xp pro (sp1) - and IE 6.0.2800, but that doesn't really matter, as the problem appears with netscape, ftp client etc. as well:

i can't resolve about 50% of internet hosts. say, i can connect to google, chip.de, zeropaid (obviously), but not to discogs.com, ebay.com etc... this seems totally random, sometimes it lets me connect to these, sometimes to others... sometimes the problem completely disappears for a while, sometimes i can hardly resolve ANY host at all... i'm telling you, it's plain weird.

this problem appeared out of nowhere, without any installations or system changes... i tried resetting the tcp/ip protocol drivers, but that didn't help. called my isp hotline, and I seem to be the only one in trouble, so it can't be a major backbone downtime or something...

    any ideas? i'm desperate...

Well why didnt you just ask?

    j/k

Give me the type of connection, cable . . dsl . . etc

What firewall software are you using?

    Do you use a router?

    Is this your home PC?

Now go to RUN, and type in CMD

    next type IPCONFIG /ALL

on the top left of the box, on the black c:\ icon, Right Click, chose Edit > Select All

Right click there again, Chose Edit > COPY

Launch notepad, then right click PASTE

Now save this info as "IP info" to your desktop.

    STOP HERE !

now give me the answers to the first 4 questions, thx

ahh... but what could cause the DHCP request to remain unanswered? is this an isp issue?

anyway, i'll try what you suggested & post the results later on... thanks for your help so far.

btw: you should write a book about network configs... you got the lovely "difficult stuff for dummies" explanation style :) :)

Ok, I totally screwed that up . . . blame the lack of caffiene

    Still try this

Reboot your DSL Modem, find the recessed button on the back to reset it.

Remove the side panel, and remove your network card. Pull it all the way out, then reseat it back in the same place. Plug the network cable back in, and reboot your PC.

make sure your hosts file is clean and also do an ipconfig /all and get your DNs server and then check the status of them with your ISP

After he changed the DNS numbers back to Automatic, unassigned in his TCP\IP properties, he was able to resolve.

Had his DNS Servers been down, his ISP would have been bombarded with calls in the first 5 minutes.

This is an iffy thing, sometimes it helps to put them in, sometimes it doesnt.

ESPECIALLY if you put the wrong # in by accident !
(Im not inferring that he did mind you)

    At any rate, he's operational.
