    BitTorrent sites attacked

Last few days the main bittorrent sites have had massive troubles. This is a message from http://bittorrent.bounceme.net/

"Ever since around 2PM, April 25th, bittorrent.bounceme.net has been the victim of a massive DDoS from multiple ip's. The ip address of my router is what is being attacked and this continues now even though I have disconnected my router. I am in the process of figuring out who is responsible and I have contacted my ISP. I am sure the BitTorrent community would be interested in this information. The site WILL BE BACK though, after I work everything out. Later, Kriz."

Someone might want to submit this as news, I didnt know, as bittorrent is not really covered here

    Short-Term Problems Resolved - by Hyrle 25/04/2003 @ 16:58

"We had some short-term problems with the website this afternoon related to some security measures I had taken. Those measures have been removed and the configuration files restored to normal. This was not related to any hacking attempt, although Filesoup administration is aware that other sites have had hacking problems, which is why we have been taking extra security measures."

I've heard it's because of the IRC server people that want people to come to their channels instead of using a clean and simple program, like BitTorrent.

The industries sounds like it could be plausible too, but it would be very uncharacteristic of them to physcially attack websites in this manner.

I kind of doubt that, I do not see how people from an IRC server would even care about people using BitTorrent.. but that's just my personal opinion.

This would make good news.. but there just isn't enough info on it yet. If they do find out who is responsible, that would make a really good story. Keep us posted mel_smiley.

EDIT: What IRC server/network were you speaking of out of curiousity?

Yeah, Moonman, when I read it was IRCers, it made sense, but now that I look back, it doesn't really meet with logic very reasonbly.

I'll have to think about where I heard that. LOL.

Yes it is the idiots who run IRC channels. They're just jealous little kids because places like Donkax, Suprnova and torrents.co.uk are taking away their traffic.

The attack on bittorent has come from some one posting bittorent links on slashdot.com.

    from
    http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slashdot_effect

"Slashdot consists of submitted articles and a self-moderated discussion on each story. In response to the stories, large masses of readers rush to view referenced sites. The ensuing flood of page requests, known as a slashdotting, often exceeds the ability of the site to respond in a timely manner, rendering the site slashdotted and, for many visitors, unavailable for a time, occasionally exceeding the site's bandwidth limitations. "Slashdotted" is sometimes abbreviated as "/.ed".

Major news sites or corporate websites are typically unaffected by the Slashdot effect. Websites that usually fall victim are smaller sites hosted on home servers or those with many large images or movie files. Often times, these websites become unavailable within just a few minutes of an article's posting on Slashdot, even before any comments have been posted."

read some of the post from herehttp://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0...44&mode=thread This sucks

It also occured to me our own Bittorrent thread which had links to many BT sites, all before or around the 25, which is when the overload happened, could have been also partly responsible for the flood. I know it couldnt have helped the situation at any rate. I am going to refrain from posting BT links from now on

Hey it could be competition (not necessarily IRC) with central servers making the ping shots.

Its obviously organized if its all happening at the same time and requires a considerable amount of bandwidth.

sfacets, Welcome to ZP, but I would like to inform you that this thread is umpteen months old. Having been started in April of 2003, I don't believe that this information is really relevent any more. Thanks for posting.
