    You like this WinMx?

Because I was having such crappy results with WinMX, I decided to conduct a little experiment:

I have two computers in my home office each with its own dedicated broadband connection and same OS, firewalls, antivirus, ports, etc. On one computer I used WinMX to download 9 video files of varying lengths and two common mp3 files. I did the exact same thing on my other computer, but instead of WinMX I used eMule. Altogether there is a total of 5.391 gigs of files.

In roughly 22 hours since I started, these are my download results:

eMule = approx 745 megs (close to 1 gig)
WinMX = approx 7.2 megs (close to nothing)

Some of you may say that it's the settings, the firewall, the antivirus software, the connection, bad luck, the time of day, the stars, the moon or whatever. I say it's WinMX. Sometimes its super fast but most of the time it's a slow as a three-legged cow....at least for me.

Of course, this little experiement is highly unscientific and not long enough to draw firm conclusions, but the fact is this: I GET MORE STUFF FROM OTHER P2PS THAN I DO FROM WINMX.

Anybody want to place your bets on which p2p wins?

Even if you had performed the experiment with two identical computers with the same Winmx connections settings, testing winmx against winmx, you would have different results.

In a macro sense, most of us, 99% of us, have long since come to the same conclusions, and have had ALL the debates on the "features" and queues in Winmx.

Youve been here long enough to look around, and to find the proper place to post. Do you see any other discussions on Winmx? Other than how to set up the Auto Responder? NO

    There's a reason for that.

It is WinMX, it is one of the great "teaser" networks out there (TONS of content, but good luck actually getting any of it)

I stick with Kazaa lite ++ (With K Lite i can download GIGS per day easy) Direct Connect ++ and once in a blue moon FileTopia

But the latter two i rarely have to use since I do not download a lot of games.

I have heard many good things about E-mule, and i wish i was able to use it, but i constantly have Low ID blah blah, router problems with it, (Even after setting it to DMZ mode) Plus those DAMNED .MET files

Seems like it's about time for a long awaited newer version. Let's see..it was about 5 or 6 months ago they said they would have a new update in 5 or 6 weeks. Yep - that's about right. With all the new versions of other p2ps coming out they are about due (overdue)..whatever.

i hear a lot of people whine about the speed and the queues of winmx. well, 95% of the time, its the person above you who you are connected to that is causing problems. not winmx. winmx is not centralized. when you open winmx, it will check your files, and then contact a server (based on geographic location) to try to find an available 'ultrapeer'.

9x out of 10, if you cant find a file, if you cant connect to someone for a download... its bc of that peer. just click refresh, and then you get a new peer. whenever i do a search and can't get more than a few good results, i just 'refresh', and i can see the difference.

the file list upload time is shorter, the searches faster and more productive, and the downloads are faster (connecting).

if you download slowly off of someone, then its most likely your fault or the other persons. if that person is uploading to 5 people, you will get 1/5th their bandwidth (assuming everyone has the same connection speed, etc.) or it might be your fault, trying to run msie and look at streaming movies at the same time.

anyway, if you can handle winmx, then you can find anything. i can.

    Very well said Isus..
Winmx is not for people who start their download and after 5 min if its not downloading at full speed they uninstall the program..
Wait and good things will come.. follow Isus's tips and you will get far.

Untill I switched to DC++, everything that I had was from Winmx, and while others were raising cain, I was hauling in the goods.

You cant have that fast food mentality, and you need to learn to work it.

lol... fast food. i used to work at arby's, and then i worked at mcd's for a while. maybe that's why i like winmx. lol

back in the day, 2.6 was the best. i was new to p2p as napster was fading... so i soon found winmx, and it was so fast. it took all the speed i had, that napster showed. napster: 2.9kB/s, winmx: 2.9kB/s, kazaa: 1.6kB/s.

it does demonstrate a good point

winmx does not work well without constant babysitting--if you need a p2p that will keep working while you are gone, donkey/mule/overnet is ok, and so is dc

if it's the weekend and you have nothing better to do, winmx and grabbing a few files will give you plenty to do

Who or what the heck is skorchie?

Don't get me wrong. WinMX has served me well (sorta like Windows 3.11), but now I know better too. I've tried every tweak and trick, but it just doesn't work when it doesn't want to. Like Isus said, it must be the dorkuses above me.

And by the way, I have tried to download the same files via WinMX on both my computers with the same slow results. I usually use two or more p2ps to download the same files and wait to see which one finishes first (sometimes two different computers, sometimes not)

I don't mind waiting at all for a file to download. It's just that I've been spoiled by that little jacksass in my taskbar.

For music I want NOW! - Kazaa Lite
For videos and everything else - eMule.
For stuff I can't find and don't mind waiting for - WinMX

    I haven't tried anything else....yet.

What would really be kick ass is if emule or another p2p could rehash and use my WinMX incomplete files. Can this be done?

An asshole who has brought hell to this site, his only plus was that he knew WinMX very well, he also bragged about how great it was at every chance he got....it was a joke that most of the older members here might get, never mind really

fine, then you send me $400 so i can get a cable internet connection.

right now, it only costs about $180 a year to get 2.9kB/s. for a cable connection, i would hafta upgrade to digital cable, AND pay $600 a year. i think digital cable would cost about another $200 a year.

so no, im not paying $800 a year just to dl what i want faster. patience is learned, not inherited.
