I find some reasons for this.

* Higher quality of the sound.

* Files are more compressed = smaller size of files = less time to download.

* The Ogg Vorbis format is free like in free speach and free beer. So its difficult to stop Ogg Vorbis.

I thing that it gives us all P2P users great benefits to use Ogg Vorbis when encoding, sharing and downloading music.

There is not just a random coincidence that 128kbs is so common used. The reason to why 128kbs such a common bitrate, is that proffesionals has found out that this is a very suitable bitrate. The size of the files is for sure an issue, this is the reason for why we bother to encode the wav files.

It is still true that OGG Vorbis gives higher quality compared to mp3 at 128kbs !

It's like the old saying "I don't see the wood for the trees". With mp3 the future is unsure. What will happen with the proprietary mp3 technology is completely up to the company that owns the mp3 technology. What we others think will have no influence. In the long run someone is paying for mp3 in someway, therefore mp3 has an unpredictable future.

Ogg Vorbis is still pretty new. The use of Ogg Vorbis is increasing. More people starts to use Ogg Vorbis each day. In linux Ogg Vorbis is working from the start. Plugins are now availible for the M$ mediaplayer. WinAmp supports Ogg Vorbis right on.

There are also some hardware that support Ogg Vorbis nowadays, this is probably due to the increasing popularity of Ogg Vorbis.

But can you get millions of non-tech/computer savvy users who only know of "Kazaa" to switch formats or download OGG instead? In fact, I have yet to come across an OGG file in a fasttrack search with fasttrack being the largest network to date.

I think that the number of Ogg Vorbis files is increasing day by day in the Gnutella net. I must say I don't know the situation in fasttrack. I guess it starts among them that are more aware, and that it after a while will spread to non-tech/computer users.

It's hard to tell, but it's pretty natural that old thinks sometimes get replaced with new better things, and that peoples mind changes and that focus changes on what's valuable and important.

OGG while good, offers no major advantage over MP3.

And the small advantages do not outweight the negetives.

I have noticed though, that ogg is becoming increasingly popular amognst video game manufacturers.

I see a lot of .mpc or musepak files on the edonkey network lately. Even .ape or monkey audio seem more popular than .ogg files.

I'm just mentioning what I see. :-)

Newsforge has publiced a short introduction written by Anne Zieger about the free music format, Ogg Vorbis.

She is careful. But she is also a litle optimistic about the future possibilties on the marcet for Ogg Vorbis.
