I just upgraded from Win98SE to W2K and now I have been experiencing the same problems that alot of users have. DL speeds of <1k/s BUT UL's at sometimes full speed. I thought it was my upgrade but I have since hooked up my old rig and the same conditions exist.
I "think" my ISP may be "filtering" the 6699 and 6257 ports. I have read about how they can filter them in such a way as to slow down the traffic to a crawl.
Are there any other ports that we can use besides 6699,6257,16699 and 16257 and still get the same geat results?
Thanks in Advance! :)
Since you upgrade your OS, may be you should also check your drivers like modem driver to see it is up-to-date for your new OS!
Everything has been updated, scrubbed, cleaned. You name it I have done it. I have even tweaked the registry setting for my cable hookup with no changes.Originally posted by DigitalJunkie

I just found "Port Detective" at another site. I will be trying this out to see what comes up.
If there is anyone else with these same problems feel free to post them.
Kazaa and K++ usually uses 1214 or you can use port 80 if that doesn't work.
Shareaza 6346
emule 4661,4242, and there are several others that you can see in the server window. Configure your firewall to open ports 4000-5000
Piolet 41170
and that's pretty much all that I use for now.

So, basically it does not matter which port you select, any port will get you out into the 'net, and give you access to the MX network? I hope that is correct.
If it's true that your IsP is blocking those specific ports, I can't imagine why they would go after WinMX and not the more popular appz. I think that network is probably dependant on those specific ports.Originally posted by Megadeus

You can probably try to tweak the settings to increase the D/L speed - but you have probably done that already.
I wonder if your ISP blocked other prots to shut out other p2ps as well. I would try to run a few different ones to see what the deal is and if that holds true, then switch your ISP.

Broadband - 256K DL / 128K UL.
How does Piolet look as far as ports/sharing is concerned?
It looks like it uses higher port numbers. I wish to stay away from the usual ports of 6699, 8888 and so on.
Thanks for the info. I will not be back until tomorrow about 19:00 EDT
Thanks again.
Piolet is great, but it's only of sharing music.
emule is great for .rar files and stuff.
Try as many of these different appz as you can and see if you are getting the same problem.
I'd be suprised if they only blocked the WinMX ports, because that isn't exactly the most popular app.
Did you ever try to use K++?

Ports 80, 8080, and 8888 are usually blocked so that people don't run webservers from there PCs. (there are other ports you can use though.)
I also find it intresting that they choke your d/l but not your u/l speed. Most ISPs don't have a problem with people dwonloading.Just uploading.

Is there an app that I could try to discover if there are any ports blocked? I have "Port Detective" but not installed just yet. I had to build my new computer desk so everything is apart. Should be back together tomorrow.
Anyway, that is some interesting info about the ports. I don't know, maybe I just have hit a slow spot. I have been tossing the idea around of trying File Navigator ( I know, this is WinMX but it is just an idea).
Thanks again!
Choose any port you like from 1-65535.
port 80 tends to get stopped by transparent webcaches.
The client port number is just for incoming connections to you.
You still have to use 6699 to connect to other winmx users who have their client set to that. If your ISP is throttling the standard ports changing it will proably make a worthwhile difference.
If you are behind a router, firewall or connection sharing, it is worth configuring your equipment to allow/forward incoming connections if possible.
My experience is that winmx is like edonkey/emule, you have to leave it on for 12-24hours at a time.
Does it default to that port? I have tried changing it from 6699 to 16699 from advice off of another website. BUT, when I checked my connections to the internet 6699 was still there, 16699 was no where to be found.Originally posted by zaphodiv

I guess I'll just have to try it again and see what happens.
You would figure that if I could connect to the MX network that my DL's / UL's would be ok. That is why I was thinking the ports were being throttled. I could connect BUT my speed was bad.
It'll be a couple days before I can try it again. Besides the new desk, I just installed an AverTV Stereo card, so I'll be putzing around with that. I'll post my findings if there are or aren't any changes.
Thanks!
