I'd put on updates for windows itself. Not sure about directx since I don't play games. I stay away from media player upgrades.

No don't ever update! Those 1337 h4kz0rs at Microsoft WANT you to do that! That's how they install trojans, worms, and other horrible things onto your computer!

I even heard that they screw up your AOL... and that they can even hack you when you are offline.

If I were you, I would search on KaZaA for "viruses". Don't let the name fool you though, that is actually a way to update your Windows.. much safer than anything Microsoft could ever send you.

    lol moonman. feeling synical today?

in case you didnt sense the sarcasm from moonman (i dont know how you couldn't; it came off him like cheap perfume from a french whore), you SHOULD always update windows itself. as for directx, media player, etc, it just depends on a)what the update does b)if your in need of an update.

but like i said, (and moonman was obviously implying) allways update windows.

There are some software-tracking and drm-enhancing strategies developing in relation to windows update, no one seems to have been grievously hurt so far but there are some people complaining about what they unintentionally ending up doing to their media player.

You will probably be fine for now, but at some point you will need to learn more about things and take responsibility for installing the software you really want and need instead of being spoonfed through the infernal Gates. Why not start now?

Yeah, what I had in mind was those complaints about mp3s not playing after wmp/drm crap. Thanks MoonMan for giving such a constructive answer btw, I didn't expect anything less from this forum.
