Just run it in dos mode

then it won't freeze at all (or get xp, it uses a better version of chkdisk, no scandisk at all)

Safe mode does wonders for running scandisk, it will almost never restart, just randomly tap F8 on bootup to shove it into safe mode

Or like notbob said, get xp, its pretty damn fast

Norton I think has a utility of some sort, but frankly it was crap, the native windows programs will be the best in a lot of cases

Norton had a disk Doctor, pcTools had a disk Tool, the list goes on and on endlessly.

Heres what yahoo says you should steal:
    EvidenceEliminator
It's a wiper with scandisk built right in !!!

not only does it "eliminate evidence" it buries itself 300 feet into your registry with about 1800 separate keys

like people care what some porn looker is doing anyway

turn cookies to "session only", put history to 0, clear cache often, and don't worry about it (not using ie or outlook makes things easier)

All good suggestions. As I am reluctant to recomend 3rd party utilities that will further bury you, and on the same level as Norton, I use the Ontrack System Suite.

Go to their homepage and look at the suite features. I am quite happy with it.

    System Tools / Disk Cleanup

chkdsk.exe is the plain white bread dos name, if you have that it's most likely in your system directory (probably system32) which is in your windows directory

In Explorer, right click the individual drive letters . . C: and chose properties. Then go to TOOLS > Error Checking.
