why, don't use the ed2k client then...
but try out mldonkey instead:
http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/mldonkey/
it's an open source ed client, which is in most aspects superior to the ed2k one. only drawback: the search blows. but as you can import dl's from linux/windoze ed2k and as there are other, more network-resource-friendly ways of getting your filez, this doesn't matter (much).
be also aware that the upcoming mldonkey version 2.0 features gnutella protocol compatibility.
there is at least one other gui for mldonkey called mldtg (mldonkey telnet gui - the original mldonkey gui ist gtk). it's more sleek alright, but neither is the search function better, nor is it as easy to use as the original gui. matter of taste, mainly.
of course, you can always run it via console or telnet to save cpu power.

Take mldonkey and use http://www.ed2ksearch.tk
to search files and find active servers with connected users sharing files that you wanna download.
That would speed up the process.
