    Only upgrading the MOBO +CPU

hey ya'll, my computer has been going devilishly slow as of late, and i don't have the coin to buy an entirely new computer, however I was thinking that i could solely uprgrade the motherboard and the processor, and keep the rest of my components the same. Does anyone know if this can be done, and if it can, how hard is it (what steps will i need to take) and so on. I suspect cpugenius will help on this on, but anyone else who knows about this, please offer some insight as well. My computer as is, is a p3 733mhz, 512mb sd100 ram, geforce mx440 (i think_ 64mb video card. Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    J

    it can be done...

    0. Since you are using windows xp, you will probably have to reinstall and, if legitimate, reactivate. BACKUP EVERYTHING OF IMPORTANCE before you get going.

    1. buy new mobo/cpu...i would also reccomend buying new ram, because the pc100 will most definately slow you down with new stuff.

    2. take everything out of the case, install the mobo/cpu/ram/everything else.

    3. boot it up! it wouldn't surprise me if windows didn't start, that's why i told you to back everything up ;-)

any additional questions...bring 'em on :cross

it wouldn't boot because in xp, even if it is 'cracked' it still won't boot if any significant hardware has changed...or at least not in my experience. i could be wrong, you should give it a try anyway.

the top speed depends on which mobo you currently have, check the documentation or the manufacturer's website...

as for taking the heatsink/cpu off

    yep. you can do it.
