    Lightbulb riaa another question

If it is illegal to copy music and the time line of copyright material has been expanded. Is it legal for a musician to make a cover of a a song if the musician is dead or has not given that band permision. If it is legal is it only illegal to change the music not taking into account that by a different person singing on the song that the music has already been changed. If it is legal to make a copy " cover " or a song why is it illegal for someone to copy a song onto a hard drive and share it amongst a peer group when the band playing the song "cover " is doing exactly the same thing ?

I a band plays a cover of a song they are playing a copy of the original. If the charge a cover charge to hear this live they are selling a copy of the original
if they record a cover of a song on an album of an artist that is no longer here to ok that band to use the cover on there album then they are stealing a song for there own profit
what i am getting at is most new bands play covers and record covers on there first albums are they not breaking the copyright law themselves
