Strange pop up from my windows xp .

Hello people on zeropaid!

Let me start from the begining about 3 weeks ago i noticed these weird gray box pop ups that would come every so often. I had this computer for over a year works well ect. never noticed them before. Well i just received another one just a couple of seconds ago their is a website they want u to go to they say u can only remove these messages if u purchase this program called message remover for 24.99. They state that if u have nt,2000,xp they are built in your computer from microsoft.

Has anyone had this problem I sure I'm not the only one lol. If u have a way to fix this problem please let me know . Help is always appreciated!:tilted :tilted

start --> Run.. --> msconfig. services tab and uncheck messenger. nothing else.

I do not have those problems, I didnt even think of that to begin with !

I do not see a specific reference to your pop up. If the problem persists, then my recomendation is to right click on the popup, look at the properties and see if it has a url address in it. It may be part of some other software that you installed recently.

Also, use Spybot Search & Destroy. It will help you get rid of these annoying hijacks and adware.

Krell, damn good info as always, but this time it was the simple answer.

Quick run down of what you need to do...

Start Menu > Run > type msconfig then hop over to the tab he mentioned and uncheck/untick the messenger crap.

Yah I was thinking that because it started out of nowhere, and not from way back, that it was something he installed, or caught.

Thats the thing about running lean and clean, I really never see this stuff, I almost laughed out loud to have caught that virus last week. Except it wasted 30 minutes of my time !

Thank-You guys for the great info. I unchecked the messenger, ran adware it found a picture of a spider from microsoft, and download a pop-up killer thanks guys! :wings

I checked out the program, they advertise it as a "free spammer tool" that gets past ISP's and the like, its almost as bad as the spammer tool for kazaa ( remember from kazaakontrol? lol)

Anyway, its a nasty program, and IMO something MS should do more about, like have it in an options menu in big letters, they've known about this for how long and haven't fixed it really? most people are not comfortable editing the registry or using any run command

These popups are just sent from the NET SEND command... Anyone with an NT based computer out of a LAN can be "attacked" by the "Web Popups"....

It's kinda simple to send any message to any NT enabled computer in the world knowing its IP...

We allready had a thread about this stuff...

This is what's called messenger spam, but it has nothing to do with MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger. It's a special service on NT, 2K and XP machines called the messenger service that's used to exchange messages between computers on a local area network. (Sounds like MSN Messenger, but it's not.) Spammers have figured out how to exploit this and can give pop-up ads on your system. Most people have no need for this service and can disable it without problem. Here's how:

1. Click Start -> Run and in the Run box type SERVICES.MSC

2. Scroll down till you get to the Messenger service.

3. Right click on it and goto Properties.

4. Click the Startup type box and change it to Disabled.

Reboot and you're done. No need to disable anything else like previously advised.
Now you won't get those ads anymore. You can still use MSN/Windows Messenger and what not without any problems.

& your NOT on a LAN

you may as well disable workstation - the dependant services are computer browser & messenger

& it should speed up your boot process

If you want to get into tweaking through services.msc, go to http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm (and make sure to READ before you click!)

Spencer, thats not the one I was talking about, but its similar, the one I saw had a list of IP's, and a bot to find more IP's that you could send to
