My mother has been having issues with her computer lately, and she assumed it might be a virus when she realized she didn't have any anti-virus software on her computer (she's not very computer savvy). She then installed the AVG free software, and she's been having problems ever since.
First, after turning on the computer, when it finishes booting up, it tells her she does in fact have a virus. But the rest of her computer is completely frozen expect for the AVG window. If she does manage to get lucky and everything isn't frozen, it also tells her to run the AVG for Windows, but she only gets error messages when trying.
Uninstalling AVG won't work, because when going into the Control Panel to click Add/Remove, she gets another error saying that access is denied. Same goes for trying to open Internet Explorer.
She's running Windows 98, and I believe the other specifics are 400MHz, 64MB ram..
It's been ages since I used win98 and I've never used the AVG thing, so I have no idea what to do here.. can anyone help?
Can you boot? Yes? If so hit up the "run" command via the start menu and type in "msconfig" without the quotes, then go to the VxD tab and disable AVGCore and AVGFsh.
Restart and try uninstalling.
Post back with yer results.

You might have luck by getting a Dos version of a anti-virus app.
Go here and get f-prot http://www.f-prot.com/products/fpdos.html This will let you scan without even booting into windows.

this is from the faq for your current anti-virus software. It will enable you to scan your hard drive in dos.

The newerish virus's dissable antivirus programs, you could really have a mess there
Try the boot scan that rickio suggested, if you can get a name of the virus, we should be able to help you a lot more
