Question Old CD-R's Not Recognized In XP

Hello, all. . . I recently built a new PC and switched from WinME to XP Home SP1. During the build, I transplanted a Yamaha CRW3200EZ burner from my old system (where it was a secondary drive) into my new one (now the lone CD-ROM). The build went fine, XP setup went smoothly, and the new system is running perfectly -- except for one very annoying thing.

Most of my old burned CD-R's (downloaded ISO's, BIN's, and some general data back-ups) are not being seen in the new system. I insert the disc, the access light flashes for a few moments, then the drive goes idle. If I go to My Computer>CD-RW Drive, the drive shows as not having a disc inserted, as if there's nothing in the drive at all.

All of these discs were created on my old system, using this SAME burner, with Nero. But now that I've moved it to a new rig and switched to XP SP1, they don't work.

I've tried installing Roxio's UDF Reader, but it didn't do a thing (as far as I could tell). I've tried switching the IDE controller to PIO, turning off UDMA, but that didn't help either. Am I missing something obvious here? Is there a setting I need to change? Or do I have to re-download all of these programs and burn them again in XP?

    Thanks. . . all help/ideas/tips are appreciated!

ok, this is gonna sound really stupid, but it works.

i love nfs: high stakes. well, after i loaded winxp sp1, i would put in the cd, and my drive would spin up, slow down, and then that would be it. the access lite would blink normally.

but the cd never autoplayed, and was never recognized by "my computer"/windows.

the only way i was able to fix this, was to lick, yes lick, the cd. as long as you havent dropped your cd in dog crap, it probly wont kill you.

i put it in, and the drive spun up, and it autoplayed like it should.

i dunno... dont make fun of me for this one guys :-P

LOL. . . I'm going to assume that licking the disc is on par with cleaning it. I have made sure that all the discs are clean and free of scratches, ink, etc. In fact they all still work perfectly in my old system, with my old plain-jane Lite-On CD-ROM drive.

But what the hell. . . I'll give 'em the tongue and see if it helps. :)

EDIT: Did you lick the whole surface? Just the bottom, or the top, too?

EDIT (2): No-go on the licking. . . I tongued the whole disc, and it still won't work. Does anyone have any other ideas?

lol, you just hafta lick the bottom.

    but since it didnt work...

i dont know, if i the disc is cleaned by one tongue licking, and then sits in its case, then why do i need to lick it again? it couldnt be dirty...

    i dunno tho. good luck.

I couldn't get NFS High Stakes 2 to work either, I finally had to get a nocd crack, and it worked. You get can get that from Kazaa very easily. (notice I didn't say Winmx, that's because you can't)
People on my "cool list" in no particular order.

Thanks for the tip, but my problem really doesn't relate to needing a no-cd crack or copy protection, et al. My OS doesn't even acknowledge the disc being in the drive!

Rickio: I'm trying to get ASPI, but getting a bit confused. Any more info would be helpful. Thanks!

UPDATE: I used the XP built-in burning wizard to test things out. I burned a few miscellaneous files onto a new CD-R, and they seemed to burn properly (no errors). However, when I insert the newly-burned disc into the drive, Windows will only recognize it maybe 20% of the time. . . when it is recognized, the files I burned are there, a-ok. But when it's not recognized, the new disc is just like the old ones (as if there is no disc in the drive at all).

I've also tried updating the firmware, but it's no use. I've also installed the newest version of Nero, but it didn't help a thing. If there were some different drivers I could try, I would. . . but Yamaha relies on Windows to supply the driver for the device, and Windows says that the current driver is the most recent.

Any other suggestions? This is driving me nuts. . .

    aspi

This is probably the best guide to aspi and should answer all your questions and help you.

    http://aspi.radified.com/

WinXP does not come with aspi that is why you are having problems. Just check out that website and if you need more help just ask.

Thanks for the additional help, Rickio. I should note that my drive is EIDE, not SCSI, but the link says that doesn't matter.

Anyway, I installed the Adaptec ASPI files, but they didn't help. I backed-up up the old files (actually, there were no old ASPI files :), installed the new files, then rebooted. Back to the desktop, put in a CD-R, and. . . nothing.

I'm starting to think my drive (which worked fine yesterday to install Windows XP, my chipset drivers, etc.), is screwed up somehow. What else could possibly be going on?!?

Yeah, get a new drive, I'd recommend a DVD burner.

UPDATE: I just did a quick swap of the drive from the new rig to the old one. Unfortunately, the Yamaha was D.O.A. in the old system, as well. I must have zapped it somehow during the build (how, I dunno -- I wore a wrist strap, barefoot on a concrete floor).

I've got a few more things to try, but it looks like I may need a new burner. Man, and this one wasn't a year old even. . .

Hold up a sec, is your drive compatable with XP?

Around a week ago somebody had a similar problem when upgrading to xp with their yamaha I think, and all they needed were some drivers, or firmware, have you checked yamahas site for updates? try a google search with xp and your drive name/model #

Yeah, the model Yamaha I have (CRW3200EZ) is supposed to be XP compatible. . . it's even on the Hardware Compatibility List. I've also checked for new drivers (none), updated firmware (nada), and any other updates. Those are all things you would assume to be the cause, but apparently not. I'll keep checking, tho.

Thanks for the help, Phalkon. I appreciate it.
