    New kind of adware!

Lately I've been getting pop-ups that come through some sort of built-in messenger service in WinXP. They give you a site to visit to "block them for good", and it costs $29.95! Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know how to stop them? There are a couple of sites associated with it:

    messengerblocker.com

    http://geocities.com/adcasterextreme/

Afterthought: do you think it would go away if I uninstalled messenger?

LoL.. first off what kind of OS do you have? If you have xp it might be the stupid messanger service that keeps sending you these stupid and annoying messages... you dont have to pay for anything if that is the case.. Tell me what your OS is and I might be able to help you disable it...FOR FREE

    Go to Start>Run

    Then type in services.msc

Then go down to messenger, and dissable the service

It has absolutely NOTHING to do with MSN messenger

You are correct sir. I did this a couple weeks ago at www.blkviper.com. D-Koolest, u should go there and disable even more services you don't need. It is very helpful and if done correctly will improve your system and you will be thankful for it. I stayed on the safe side in general. And remember I am not liable for anything that happens to ur comp, lol.

On a different note, I would hate receiving those messages as well. I was using Avant browser and didn't get a single pop-up until those came along. I thought it was a leak in the system or something. And about a month and a half ago, I got a really strange one that I saved, but has since been deleting. It was like a message from Muhammed to Elijah displaying both IP addresses. It was basically a statement saying how Bush is a war monger and is hell bent on destroying Iraq. It also said things to the extent of kill Bush and freedom lovers. Then it started making threatening comments. That's a brief overview of it. I wish I still had it to share with you all. I was even gonna inform someone of authority (no joke) and had my dad take a look at it. He read it and told me not to worry about it, saying it was too vague to meddle over. It probably was, but you know, I was just making sure.
To all my freaks out there: HOLLA if ya hear me.

I can be characterized as the smartest dumbass and the dumbest smartass.

Yeah, got the blk viper site off of techtv a while back

If you really want to tweak your system out, go to http://www.blkviper.com./WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Just make sure to READ EVERYTHING, you can really fuck up your computer, trust me, I did some very stupid things through this method

On that site, it also tells you more about messenger

Don't forget Elder Geek's Services Guide for WinXP, it also applies to Win2K.

Also, you can just rename the folder Messenger is in for a sleazy, easy way to keep it from molesting you.

Not if its coming through the messenger service

This service was ment for large networks, so that admin could send messages to the network, without running a program

Something else I just thought of, if you can recieve these types of messages, thats a bad sign, that means somebody can easily get through your firewall, so you may want to check for holes, or install a better one
