Where are you? Where have you gone? My beloved Soulseek for the coolest, hard-to-find stuff?
Can anyone shed light on this matter? Haven't been able to connect for a few days now.
Damn, it won't connect for me either. Must check forums for answers...
Uh oh, the website appears to be down as well. What in tarnations is going on here???
Looks like the best P2P ever (IMHO) has been shutdown by RIAA. That's at least what I saw on their board before it became unreachable. AAARRRGGGHHH!
Well, the fact is that it seems like Soulseek is unreachable worldwide, at the moment, either the app or www.slsk.org.
I was able to access some French forums dedicated to Soulseek (since Slsk's official forum is also down!), and they have two kinds of explanation for this :
- The programīs creator and server owner, Nir, has unplugged the server that hosted the main information and connection databases, for a number of reasons : problems with file queues, execssive memory consumption, unexpected crashes, configuration probelms, and, most importantly, his disappointment at the fact that a program created for fans of electronic music is slowly getting infested by mainstream, Britney Spears-type of crap and getting more RIAA attention.
this is another possibilty...that this could be the work of the RIAA...donīt forget that SoulSeek site is registered by Nir himself.
- Another explanation that came up right before the forum went down is taht there was going to be an update. We just donīt know if it was on ther server or the application itself...
Speaking for myself, I hope itīs the latter...for now, Soulseek is dead...
Stupid people shouldnīt breed.
Hmmm... Been following the SoulSeek board for the past few days, and among the rest it had a poll conducted by Nir, in which he asked people which SoulSeek problem was the one they'd want him to fix first (including all the issues you raised at your post). As the poll was only opened 2 days ago, I can't believe he took the software off the air for an update so quickly. :mellow
DAMN!
Can't say I've tried a search for that kind of style so I wouldn't know about that.......but I've been finding so much brilliant Moog / ondioline early synthesizer recordings from the late 1960s and it's been a real goldmine. Things by Perrey-Kingsley (1966's "The In Sound From Way Out"), Dick Hyman from 1969, and all sorts of kooky stuff.... slowly getting infested by mainstream, Britney Spears-type of crap
Being almost like a popular music historian, I love to plunder the depths of previously explored corners of music history, and some of these recordings are out of print and you just can't find in a store anywhere on cd (at least, in my country).
So if it's the RIAA involved here, I think they have no business poking their nose in the case of such loopy old now-publically-unloved recordings, and should be available on programs such as Soulseek for us popular music historical thrillseekers. Soulseek is mym p2p program of choice, so much that I stopped using Kazaa Lite. In the meantime, I've gone back to Kazaa Lite and downloading old Oblongs episodes. Just can't seem to find the music I want on there (and if I did find anything, chances are it would be faked or looped anyway).
Hurry home, Soulseek............ :fire please come back to me......
I would agree, I use soulseek ALL the time to grab rare recordings of whatever style that I am exploring.Originally posted by blam blam blam

It is indeed a loss, however there is hope :-) On the soulseek FAQ, it said that Nir might allow users to host networks if he needed to; the only reason that is not allowed at the moment is because of the donation system.
As for britney spears mainstream crap, as long as you are sharing some variety of music I don't think it matters. Myself, I have electronic music, hip/trip-hop, rock, AND pop, so there's no reason I can't share pop as well, as long as it's not the ONLY music.
an eagle in your mind
phew, that sure is heartening news
It doesn't say anything about why though... Anybody know for sure?
Oh, my. I hope that Soulseek will back on track soon. I know that there was an accident once, when Soulseek wasn't working for a week and then new site (slsk.org) was created. Hmmm...:mellow

Soulseek is alive and well..The good people at Napjunk have gotten in touch with NIR....He is simply switching webhosts...Since their IP cache uses the same IP as their web server (shareaza part 2), the network is not accessable...
You can read our story on this here:

Phew guys you just made my day. :gj
Going through the links you have posted, I'm beginning to understand how SoulSeek community became so great, as It truely had a global underground spirit. I guess that the fact it had been kept strictly a music p2p proggie is one of the reasons for that.
D.
What the hell is soulseek? i've never heard of such program before
