Thumbs down Computer doesn't recognize CD-RW drive

I changed my OS to WinXP Pro just to try it out (I'm getting a new computer soon anyway) and it doesn't recognize my CD-RW drive. I unplugged it and then plugged it back again, but still the computer won't recognize it. It's a Yamaha CRW2200EZ. I've tried to find the drivers for it online but all the sites just lead to some dead link. Can one of you guys hook me up with a good download site for the drivers?

Hmm, I have a similar CD-RW drive (a Yamaha 2100E), and it worked fine in XP. You could try reinstalling XP, but I doubt that would work. It might be best to just wait for your new computer.
P.S. I hate Yamaha's stupid website... It's impossible to dl drivers from there... When are they going to fix those dead links?

It might be the new OS or something like that, but about 2 weeks ago, my burner juz stoped being registered as a drve by my comp. Eventually, i took it to a shop (im not too worldly on hardware etc) and they said that the burner blew, or fuzed, or what eva, and blow one of the ports on me mother board. So, i had to buy a new burner, which i did, and now because i only have one port, i have a DVD drive juz sitting there not doin a thing because i have the burner in its place as i need a burner more than a DVD playa. Although, iot prob worked out alrigh because now i have a 48X24X48 speed burner!!

Yamaha CD-R drives will operate with Windows XP. Yamaha does not supply drivers for the drives because the required drivers are already built into the Operating System (Windows XP).

You can download a copy of the firmware here:
    http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/prod...m/a2210e_e.exe

Do not confuse this with drivers. Care must be used in flashing firmware.

How to check the CD-R/RW firmware version:
For Windows XP (with Nero Burning ROM installed):

    Click "START" button
    Click "All Programs"
    Click "Ahead Nero"
    Click "Nero-Burning ROM"
Cancel "New Compilation" window OR close the "Wizard"
Go to Toolbar and click on "Recorder"
    Click "Chose Recorder"
Click on the Yamaha drive and the firmware revision will be listed in the "Recorder Information" window

Was the drive already installed and properly functioning when you installed XP, or, did you install the drive subsequent to XP?

I've had the drive in the computer for about a year. I installed it when I was using WinME. It worked fine with Win2000, and I just installed WinXP Pro Last night (I wanted to try it out since I will be installing a full version from scratch when I build my computer). I have that AltoMP3 software and was about to rip some cd's I have, and when I opened up the program it said it couldn't recognize the CD-ROM, which I thought was odd. Then I went and opened up the cd player app. that comes built into the OS and it said "There is no cd-rom player attached to this computer".

MY CD-RW drive doesn't show up when I go through the steps you listed with Nero, nor does it show up when I have to select a drive when I open WinInst file to flash the firmware. There's no trace of it at all.

Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab> Device Manager

Do you see an entry for CD ROM\DVD Drives ?

Also, in Explorer, do you see your CD drive there?

This was an upgrade from ME to XP?

It took me a while to get my Sony DRU-500a to work with XP Pro, but I switched the EIDE thingamajiggers so that it was the primary instead of the slave and uhh, yeah, I'm really tired, but it worked, does anyone with brains know what I did?

Try swapping drives with another one that works bascially and try to isolate the problem. Could it be that it's not plugged in all the way because one time I put in a Video Capture card and for the life of me I could not figure out what was wrong with it. Nothing would recognize anything, and I screamed at ATI for months about their crappy drivers, and then I found out that it wasn't plugged in all the way....

And then I found out that their drivers only supported 95 and 98, so I just about had a come apart as you can imagine, after paying $75 dollars and spending weeks on ebay to find one that had enough memory and would fit my PCI slot.
People on my "cool list" in no particular order.

    Krell,

It doesn't show up under either.

The order of updated OS's Me-2k-XP Pro. It worked fine until XP.

Another thing to mention is that the CD-RW doesn't even spin faster when I put in the CD-ROM, like the player itself doesn't know it's there.

Thats exactly what I want to establish, that you have only upgraded your O/S, you have not done a fresh installation, that you have NOT touched your hardware, or messed with your cables etc.

Use the Aida32 util, and send me a full report. I have a hunch that you need to udate your MB drivers for your chipset. When you do this, it will reinstall your IDE bus and IRQ assigments. I think you will pick up your CD drive in that process.
