    cnet catchup

Whatever happened to this nifty utility? It was a very useful tool while it was around. For those of you who don't know what it was, it was a program that searched your computer and gave you updates based on what programs you had. It can also be found in Norton SystemWorks under 'Extra Features.' I really liked how it handled driver updates too. Anyway, does anyone know why they discontinued it?

Yeah, seriously man. That proggie kicked ass. It saved a buncha time allowing me to avoid going through all my program files and going to the developer's sites for updates, etc, etc. And those driver updates (man drivers are a bitch on 56k) were helpful as hell. It's been gone for a while and I've been to their site and they don't really have an explanation. I'm sure someone who knows will reply. :)

I know that. I've seen that page before. I just wanted to know WHY it was discontinued.

I can imagine it was a lot of work for them. Sure, when you used it you had to see a few banner ads, but how often would you use it? I imagine an obsessive compulsive would use it daily.

Heck, as much as I loved it, I would only use it once every month or two. Let's face it, most of us have our ear to the ground when it comes to major patches and upgrades. Frankly, you had to be careful when using it. Don't accidentally upgrade something like Nero. Doing that will cause you to have to either pay for the upgrade or patch it again.

Once every month or two isn't much traffic (banner ads) for all the software experts they must have needed to keep this application current. Besides, this is the kind of application you use to separate you from the other shareware/freeware sites. Now that they own hotfiles as well tucows becomes their only competition as number one. They have tucows beat by about ten million inique IPs per day.

If anyone knows of another program/service like it, I would love to know about it.

I havn't heard abouyt something like that. I used to use catchup quite a bit. I hope there is somethin out there that does the same job. Thinkin now about how much effort would have had to go into it....jeeze, so many programs, soo many updates.
