When using WinMX, what can I do...hardware and/or software wise...to hide my IP address? Will subscribing to a service such as this one http://www.anonymize.net/index.html help?
you can try to find a socks proxy that works which is near impossible, and pretty tricky to get working so there isnt much you can do.
why do you need to hide an ip address? esp. with winmx? its not something you can find as easily as a netstat on kazaa. so even if you share pretty heavily, it shouldnt be a big problem
unless, of course you share at a college or university, it won't matter what you do, they can find you.

I guess getting caught is my main concern with the recent ruling against Verizon and the other stories about people getting fined for sharing. I heard tracking home users on WinMX was difficult, but you can never be too sure.
I am running Norton Internet Security also, but maybe I'm just a little paranoid. I've tried Stealther 2.7, but I don't think it offers any protection for file sharing programs and besides that, it slowed my browser back to the 56k days.

the Verizon case is going to get appealed so i wouldnt expect it to effect anything for a while.
Even if they lose it doesnt mean anything other verison users would get the little TOS threat letters like users of other isps get.
When you get those letters from the RIAA, just throw them in the garbage. They'll be worded as carefully as other junk mail like the Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes, by saying something like "you could be guilty of copyright infringement, which is subject to fines or imprisonment".

Connections appearing and dissapearing in netstat match up with file transfers starting and ending in winmx. When I see a connection to AOL or Mexico it is allways going at 0.4KB/s :bk
Anyone making a serious attempt at tracking users will use somthing more sophisdicated than netstat. There are plenty of programs which can log connections and the amount of data transfered. If you download 10MB from somtone its easy to match that to the connection to 1.2.3.4 that started and ended at the same time as the transfer and delivered 10MB of data.

Like sephiroth said, use a socks proxy.
In Winmx, go to settings, Internet Connection, Outgoing TCP Connections, and enter an anonymous opaque socks proxy ip or domain name in there, and select socks4 or socks5, whichever your proxy is.
It's up to you to find the anonymous proxy, there's lots of places to find them. I won't post it here for obvious reasons, but those who know their stuff will know where to find them. The trick is to find a reliable one, that's also fast.
That's your answer. That will do what you want.
