Playstation 2: 50 million units sold

PlayStation 2 continues to increase the distance to GameCube and Xbox.

During the Christmas rush more than 6.5 million PlayStation 2 were sold around the world compared to the 2 million units sold in November. We have analyzed and compiled the sales figures that have been reported in the last couple of years. On December 31st, 2002 Sony had delivered more than 50 million PS2 to the following parts of the world:

Europe: 16 million units
North America: 21 million units
Japan: 12 million units
Other regions: 1 million units

Sony introduced their console PlayStation 2 in Japan on March 3rd, 2000 and since then the sales have steadily climbed.

Sales of PS2 since the introduction:

2000-03-04, sales begin in Japan
2001-03-25, 10 million units
2001-09-30, 20 million units
2002-05-21, 30 million units
2002-09-17, 40 million units
2002-12-31, 50 million units
2003-03-31, 60 million units (estimation)

PS2 was introduced in USA on October 26th, 2000 and in Europe November 24th, 2000. Since then Sony has gradually launched PS2 around the world. The total production is at about 3 million units per month.

The competitors Nintendo GameCube (8 million units sold) and Microsoft Xbox (7 million units sold) are still far behind. In the year 2002 almost 30 million PS2 were sold compared to 6 million GameCube and 5 million Xbox.

shut up, one reason it has sold more is because ps2 came out a long time before xbox. and i have said this before and i will say it again....ps2 has never made it to the guinness books for being the most powerful gaming system. gta made ps2, if it werent for that ps2 would be nothing. xbox has a big line of gonna be huge selling games coming out this year.

I must say that this is a silly assumption on your behalf. Power is not what the videogame purchasing public wants, it is many games that are fun to play. The X-Box does have the most powerful hardware, but people are not buying them since they have far less games than the PS2 and the ones that are out aren't that great.

The PS2 will always have the advantage over the X-Box (not because of the early roll-out, just look at the Saturn and the Dreamcast) because:
1)It is backwards compatible with the PSX, giving all those with PSXs the ability to use their old games (in higher resolution with lower loading time as well)
2) It has a large library of games.
3) There are many good games available.
4) Many of the games are very inexpensive ($20-$40).
5) Since the installed user base is high, they can trade with friends etc.

I have a Cube and a PS2 and I would buy an X-Box, but the games look pretty and that is it. What is the point of a game that looks good yet is no fun?

I choose quality and fun over appearance any day. As they say, "you can't judge a book by its cover."

Plus, the X-Box has no support in Japan, so it is not receiving as many good games. Microsoft is still losing money on each X-Box sold and they are not recuperating from game sales as is the still vital Nintendo and Sony.

it doesn't matter that PS2 came out earlier. It has still outsold XBOX during every time period anywhere in the world. and since XBOX's release, around 30 million people have purchased PS2. 4.4 million have purchased Vice City. Would you please explain the rationale for the other 25.6 million? I've had a PS2 since Jan.2001. and have never played VC. Why didn't more people buy an XBOX over christmas when it came with two free games? Cause they didn't want the included console. In 2002, of the top 20 best-selling games, 13 were for the PlayStation 2, with five for GameBoy Advance and one each for the GameCube and the Xbox.

yeah two BAD games. you have never played vice city? What the f*ck is wrong with you?

Halo is nice but theres has to be more than halo for me to get one. Or pixelated T&A in a volleyball enviroment..

The reason why PS2 has sold more is because they have better games like MGS2(substance is really just vr missions for the xbox verison), Grand Thefo Auto, and etc..

i'll get vice city eventually. i'm just a little set back moneywise since the network adaptor came out. i hope next year they add voice support to more games.

i have to agree with wingnut and sephi here, pretty graphics just aint that important when it comes to games...i still love a good old game of space invaders, or pac man....even a game of pong is great fun..graphics aint that important, its the fun factor that counts, not that i know about Xbox or playstation cos i dont have one and i never will.

and wingnut owning a ps2 a gamecube and considering an Xbox.....thats frightening...didnt your mother teach you games rot your brains?

I love my ps2 cept for its little DRE (disc read error) problem...been in twice for that came back 2nd time and disk tray wouldnt open so now they giving me a whole new one 4 free. but other than that i am with the guys saying eye candy isnt everything...i prefer some of the classier games like GTA3 and VC they are excellent and rockstar should know sales would skyrocket if they went box with it to but isnt it odd how they dont...and all of these so called new and good games for the box i wont be holding my breath on it.. Now for sales...if the box was such a prodigy child of bill gates and so awesome ppl would own that over a ps2 so its got to have some problem especially when its still losing although they are offering 2games with it still at 199.
