Am I the only one that is having alot of trouble connecting to anyone behind a firewall? Is there some way to improve the way firewalls are handled? I really like Gnucleus and the Gnutella network it just seems Kazza Lite and the Fast track network handle firewalls much better.

Gnutella uses the port 6346 as standard, open it in your firewall!

My firewall is open to port 6346. The connection is timing out on a push request that I am sending to the host. Their firewall is the one that is closed to the network, Hence the need for a push request. If this is not right please let me know.

Push messages are inrealible the push message isnt reaching your computer through the network and so is why its timing out. Theres not much you can do about it except try to find more sources and get it off of someone else or get the push message to be resent. You could try canceling and redownloading but many times the push route would be lost and it wouldnt be able to download.

Possible solution:

Did you set incoming ports in the Gnucleus program to the port 6346? If you didn't I would highly reccomend to do this, it should slove your firewall connectivity problem. Otherwise, if this does not work, just set your firewall security setting to a lower amount.

Why is it I do not have this problem on the fastrack network? More sources to chose from, or does that network handle firewalls better? I have all firewall and gnucleus settings open to port 6346 and more download connections time out then connect and the push request never works. Maybe the problem is not the firewall at all maybe the way requests are routed is what causes the problem. I am not a programmer but I have been on gnutella for a while. I am not a complete moron I have a bit of knowledge on how the network operates. Just do not understand why I can get more download connections to start on fast track then on gnutella.

Try to change your port to an other one, perhaps the other side is blocking the port 6346! This can happen with unverversities and companies!

And for the time out, it is normal that you got a time out message when the host is busy! A time out means only that you are not able to connect to this host, do you never have luck with connecting or only sometimes? Try to download some other files (to test)!

Did you tried an other Gnutella client? If so do you have the same problems?

I have the same problem with all clients I have tried. That is in comparision to kazaa lite. I do get downloads from gnutella, it is when I have 10 sources and they are all busy and time out that gets me frustrated.

Yes, but you can try only an other net... I use several nets I get ALWAYS my files! :shy

Indeed it does - try using a Dos command menu and type
netstat to see which port is being used for http - then use that port number in gnucleus and it usually works a treat - it did for me anyway ;)

(to set it open the preferences /local/ set incoming port
and enter whichever port is used by your browser: mine is 80 for example - this can usually get you around the blocked port problem
