So all this talk of newsgroups is interesting.
So how do they work?
What is the best one among them?
How much do they cost?
Would it still be wise to access them with a vpn?

So much information out there, it can be overwhelming.
Basically you have a provider and a client.
The provider can be free, although its hard to find good content and retention on free servers.
Paid providers are cheap these days, with unlimited traffic accounts starting below $10 a month.
The 'best' is debated, but I would go with astraweb. I've had the least problems with them in terms of incomplete items.
How it works varies, with some people using built in search engines within reader clients, while others (including myself) use indexing websites like binsearch.info to search for releases, and create a file that will load that index into your client for downloading.
Good luck in your research!
