ASUS G53JW NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M LCD monitor not recognized (HDMI) + purple screen

I have a relatively new (FEB) ASUS G53JW laptop.
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M
    Intel Core i7 740QM(1.73GHz)
    15.6" LCD
    4GB DDR3 1333
    500GB HDD 7200rpm
    DVD Super Multi

    My issue is thus:

I watch movies on my projector (Mitsubishi HC1500) and on my Samsung 50" Plasma TV (not simultaneously) via HDMI. The issue has been when I have either fallen asleep and left the laptop and projector running for a time, sometimes with the laptop lid closed, and I have either turned everything off, or I have turned off the TV and unplugged my HDMI cable in my groggy state. What happens is that I open the laptop lid and the screen is all a shade of purple, the whole desktop is shifted verticle so that the top of the screen is actually coming up from the bottom, and there is a horizontal bar across the bottom of the screen that is solid in color and containing hundreds of vertical white stripes within it.

The first instance, it happened with the projector. I figured it was because I didn't care enough to properly disconnect and shut down the computer that there was some confusion in recognizing the appropriate monitor. So I restarted the laptop and reconnected the hdmi cable, and then disconnected it, and all was good.

The second instance happened with the TV. I had the lid closed and fell asleep. I turned off the TV at some point and awoke to open the lid and lo and behold the screen was the purple color again. This time, no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to recognize my laptops LCD monitor. After looking into it further, my laptop was being recognized as "generic PnP monitor" and there was no option for the LCD display only. I could disconnect the HDMI cable, but the LCD display would remain generic pnp display and still purple. I tried reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers to no avail. After a while, the LCD display booting to a black screen and the TV was booting as if it was the default monitor. I would have to close the lid and then open it so that the purple screen would come back.

I have been trying to research this and to get into safe mode to mess with the BIOS and/or windows drivers to see what I could do there. Which brings me to the greater issue at hand. I ended up having to use msconfig to get into safe mode because pressing f8 wasn't working. Guess what, my computer boots into safe mode without a screen! I currently have a laptop that is booting into safe mode with no visual.

I probably sound like a total idiot, I'm usually not as inept to fixing these things, but I'm so frustrated with this POS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

so if you boot your lappy normally without any devices connected it's screen comes up purple and the normal desktop is only partly shown?

to see if this is a driver issue or a more serious hardware problem, try accessing the BIOS menu. to do this boot your laptop and press and hold the "DELETE" button (or F2, or whatever it says on the startup screen, but most Asus lappys i've seen have BIOS at DELETE). ensure that you have no devices connected at this point.

now if your BIOS menu displays correctly we can safely say this is a driver issue. if not, then i'd advice you to get to the nearest asus service center.

now if bios is displaying correctly, then boot into safe mode to remove and reinstall drivers [you already knew that :) ]. to do this press F8 on boot, then select your hard drive on the boot device menu that comes up and then immediately press F8 again. if you've done it correctly, you should see the windows boot menu. remember that asus systems default F8 to device boot menu which is why you have to select hard drive from there before you can access the normal F8 function.

good luck and keep us posted.

    currently, no.

When I boot it now, the screen is black. Which I am assuming is because I have changed the boot order to boot directly into safe mode. Which I did in MSCONFIG and did because I was attempting to access the BIOS in the first place.

I am assuming that if I were able to somehow get it to NOT boot directly into safe mode, that it would boot as you have described. But seeing as it currently boots without a screen (it boots an unresponsive black) I don't know how I am going to do that without being able to see what I am doing :(

    I'm phuqued
