I use Comcast and they sent me an email threating to shut off my account because i downloaded something off of bit torrent
is there anything i can do to keep downloading but not get in trouble with Comcast?
like a proxy maybe or an alternitive to bit torrent.

I have comcast, and use torrents, and have had no trouble for many many years using private smaller sites.

Teranews.com is a good newsgroup service you can use to learn how.
They have a few free servers you can use to test your reader and see what's out there.
As for Bittorrent safety, I have a couple of ways to improve safety.

a2son2 They say nothing in life is free, you'll pay for it one way or another. In your case by threatening letters, possible disconnection, possible legal action and of course stress. For about 50 cents a day you can get a really good newsserver and avoid such stresses. I realize that last statement sounds like a late night Sally Struthers commercial but its worth it to me.
Not to say I don't use Bittorent, I do, Bittorent is very good for obscure content and your not likely to be sued over obscure content. Just be careful what your using bittorent for. Don't download pre-releases or super popular stuff like Avatar. That's just asking for trouble and all that stuff can be gotten pretty much anywhere, safer. I would also avoid downloading porn on bittorent at this time. The porn industry is suing just about everybody now days and there are plenty of good Usenet porn indexing sites (not that I would know of course.)
i use Utorrent
Get PeerBlock first. That's a filter which blocks by IP addresses
and it automatically gets fresh lists from reliable sources. (Like me. ;])
Download this list and unzip it in µTorrent's application data folder.
That folder may be hidden, so type "%appdata%\utorrent" in the
address bar of Explorer to go straight there:

I recommend downloading peerblock...it's an IP anonymizer.
IP anonymizer = no such thing
Like wearing a rubber when banging a street hooker. Sure, she most likely won't get pregnant but you'll still probably get herpes.
I recommend PeerBlock because it blocks people from interfering
with your computer even when they know where you are.
IP anonymity is not hard to do but it tends to slow down your internets.
