    WinMe To Win2k Pro

Since getting a serial number fo XP is looking like an impossible goal, I've gone with Win2k. I used Isobuster to extract all the files into one folder. Do I just burn the entire contents as is onto a disk? Is there anything I need to do before I install the program?

why use isobuster? i'd just burn the image directly to disk with your favorite app. after you get it burned, FORMAT THE HARD DRIVE ANIHALATE WINDOWS ME ahh, that felt good. then go for it!

p.s. windows xp keys aren't that hard to come by :mellow

Actually, finding a valid serial key for XP is very simple, with the right keygen, of course.

Back to the question at hand, You can install Windows 2000 in one of two ways, Either from your hard drive or from a CD.

You will want to burn the ISO to a CD directly without any file extraction (if that's the option you choose). If you just burn the extracted files to a CD, the CD will not automaticly boot from the drive. You can get around that by creating the set of 4 'Windows 2000' startup floppy disks.

You can install Windows 2000 directly from the hard drive, provided the installation files do not reside on the same drive you intend to format (if you intend to format the destination drive, that is). Else, you can just install Windows 2000 with the install files still on the drive.

I use Nero to burn discs. Do I burn it as a CD-Rom (ISO) or a CD-ROM (BOOT)?

I only have one hard drive, so I'm assuming that loading it directly from the hard drive wouldn't be an option. If you could elaborate a little I'd appreciate it.

ISO is what you need to burn it as, even if it works as a autoboot you risk getting a coaster. You can always type "X:\" then "setup" to start the install process......

The El Torito standard is kinda crappy.....so making a bootable CD can sometimes be a bitch anyway.

    Don't forget to install SP1!

Thumbs up Windows 2000 up and running

Well I just completed the task. I just ran setup from my desktop and went through and didn't have any problems. Just had to re-install some drivers. My MP3 player actually works now. I just uninstalled all the programs that were listed as having compatability problems. Besides it taking longer to load at startup I'm happy. Are there any updates or anything I need to download from Microsoft?

    Thanks for the help.

Downgrade? What the fuck are you talking about?

Windows ME runs off FAT 16 and 32....

If you wanna install 2k you can either choose FAT 32 OR NTFS just like XP....no need to reformat.

So he doesn't have to format unless he wants too.

    Lol.

I selected NTFS as you mentioned. I don't plan on changing OS's anymore on this machine. I'm going to get a new computer from ABS a few months down the road anyhow. I had to download a few .dll files that were missing for a few programs, but other than that everything seems ok. I may get an additional hard drive for it since the one I have is only 30gb and is about full. What I don't get is that the media I have on my computer takes up like 12gb of space max, and I'm a little confused as to what else is taking up the rest of the space.

Windows Me was released after windows 2000 therefore making 2000 a downgrade which isn't possible sorry.
Then ask me why my computer recognized WinME as an outdated version and prompted me to choose to load updated files from the new OS? I Went from WinME to Win2k using the upgrade option, so either I pulled off a miracle, or your reasoning is faulty.
