Post Do you run your PC 24/7? If so, what are your rigs specs?

Just wondering what would be a good price to have a rig to do this without going over the top in spending. Looking at a new rig but it has to be practically silent, principally for torrents, video editing (capturing VHSs and my PVR) and it seems a really quiet one would be around the £2k mark (has to be watercooled). So if anyone has really quiet rigs that are run 24/7 if you could post the main specifications then may be I could try and save myself some money.

Any help will be much appreciated!

I don't run it 24/7, but my rig is a i7 920 with 6 gigs of triple channel ram. Cost me only $1K, so you probably could do with something close. I definitely say stick with Intel if you are doing video editing. AMDs don't cut it when you are doing something other than gaming.

i have an atom based box that is on 24/7 for torrents and as a file server. it's quiet, runs low on electricity and does the task admirably. i don't even have a monitor for it and use other machines for beefier work.

what i'm saying is, if you have an old box lying about, you could easily set it up for stuff like bittorrent, and buy the new one exclusively for your main work, because a rig with 6-8 gigs of RAM, a heavy duty graphics card, and a butt load of high capacity hard disks, cooling solutions, not to talk of the processor, will draw a significant amount of power, leave it on 24/7, and in a year you'll prolly have spent as much as a new machine. ok maybe not but you get the picture.

I am currently running a 9850BE with 6 GB DDR2 and I have done some, some, video encoding for my phone to get movies on it, seems like it takes a little bit to get it done. Couldn't tell you to what my electrical cost would be to have my system running 24/7 since every item that can be overclocked is overclocked.

I would go the AMD/ATi route considering the price gap from AMD - Intel. I don't mind the few minutes extra it takes to get my encoding jobs done.

I dunno AI, the charts show that the top end AMD processor is on par with the mid-top tier Intel chips. Of course the top Intels are about a grand alone, but the 920 I'm running is fairly close in price to the hexacore AMD while still performing better for the number crunching tasks.

I realize that if you only do a little encoding, the price isn't going to be worth it, but NDGAARONDI specifically said that it was going to be one of its main functions. Those 2-3 minute differences per task are going to add up significantly over the life of his machine. I used to put entire seasons of shows on my PSP, and on my old dual core, it was about 12 minutes per episode. On my current it's 3.5 for the same 20 minute show. If I had gone with the AMD, I'd be looking at ~5 minutes per episode. Not bad, but since I'm doing 25 episodes at once, that extra minute and a half becomes an extra half hour for the whole job.

I have got where I run my shiz all the time even though I know I should not. I had a "thermal event" not to long ago in fact...too much uploading!

My "rig" is a P4 2.66Ghz with onboard graphics! WOW! I bought it at a used computer store about 11 months ago for the cheap $ because I had very little $$$ at the time & since then I have been GIVEN several PC's all be it that they are all old as crap! But anyways... this old PC does most things I need it to do except for playing advanced game EMU's. Thats the only reason I shall be buying a better PC in the future. Not to change the subject but it seems that to most people needs PC's have hit a wall. I know people who still like to buy better PC's even tho0ugh they do not need them really. Nice toy...

A good power supply is a MUST if you are running your PC all the time...especially using torrents. Torrent pull the JUICE!!! Cheap power supplies can pop & burn the house down! BFG PS's are POS!!!! Do not buy!

EDIT: BTW, I have noticed a drop of about $30 when I cut my PC off when not in use. It cost a lot of $$$ to supply the bandwidth!

Rosewill power supplies. That is all.

Ok, that is not all. I bought a Rosewill PSU 4 years ago and have been running my PC with it 24/7/365. The fan eventually died, but I bought a 120mm case fan and put it in the PSU. Still working perfectly.

Antec seem to work fine for my $$$. I have tried a few but always come back to Antec. True power is a very sturdy PS indeed!

have to agree with you, I have the TruePower Quattro 850W PS. Had it since Jun 08. Never faltered.

Signa - I agree with you. Since I encode every so often, it doesn't bother me to have to wait an extra half hour here or there. Intel would be the way to go, if: 1. I had the money, 2. It bothered me for the encoding times, 3. I had the money.

Since my entire PC cost me about 1000, including my 28" 1920x1200 and 4850x2 vid card. I couldn't find an Intel system to compete for that price. Mind you these prices were for 2008. Now, I could find a hexacore and 6 GB DDR3 w/MoBo and vid card for that price alone today.

Cheers for the suggestions guys. Just wondering when to get the new rig - either in December or when I finished undergrad for good.

Below is something I looked at:

CoolerMaster Cosmos Silent Gaming Tower Case
    Intel® Core™ i7 930 2.80GHz 8 MB cache LGA1366
    Cyberpower Sound Absorbing Foam
Cyberpower Advanced WaterCooling Large Kit (Including 240m Radiator, 750res Pump/Reservoir, Delta CPU Block, 2 High CFM Fans, Tubing, and Coolant)
    White Tubing – Large
Cyberpower Anti-Vibration Fan Mounts -- reducing the noise generated from Fans
Cyberpower Power Supply Gasket -- reducing the noise generated from Power Supply
    GigaByte GA-X58A-UD3R
    6GB (3x2GB) PC12800 DDR3/1600mhz Triple Channel Memory
Liquid Cooling ATI Radeon 5970 2GB DDR5 VRAM
Be Quiet 700watt Straight Power E7 PSU
128 GB Crucial C300 Series SATA III Gaming MLC Solid State Disk
Asus Xonar Essence STX PCI-E Audiophile Sound Card, Optical/Dolby Pro Logic II

It's something I've 'made up' from a shop that sells custom PCs. I'm paranoid about breaking things and I've looked at the added cost of having it built for me and it's not as much as I thought and for once I will be lazy and pay the extra. I've got some old peripherals I can sell to mitigate cost, in addition to living like a monk while at university.

Wait until the 6000 series fully comes out. AMD's performance with a 6870 in CrossfireX yielded impressive results. It beats the 5970 in quite a few games. Of course depending on the resolution. Anything smaller than 1920x1200 is a waste for any SLI/Crossfire type application. The 6870 is supposed to replace the the 5850 and does a damn good job at doing so, while being able to keep up, in some cases, the 480 in SLI, while cutting down on the power consumption compared to the 5850.

I would still entertain AMD as a CPU. Hexacore costs 280 on Newegg.

I have always found that the disparity in price has been a couple hundred bucks for a shop to build it. If you can swing the cash, more power to you. You do get the "warranty" with a pre-built computer.

Thanks for the reply. Turns out my capture device only works with specific motherboards that have the Intel X58 chipset (BlackMagic USB thingy). If it lasts four or five years then I'll be happy. Just deciding on minor details based on the money I have and the upcoming VAT increase. My internet connection is my only major bill as I live with my parents so I'm happy to pay for top quality specs (hoping it might be worth it). Only really deciding between Intel i7 950 and the 980X. I hope to get some money back when selling some of my existing parts.
