OK for whatever reason, last night my computer reset itself and when I opened everything up this morning the torrent I was downloading had disappeared.
Not literally of course, but it had removed itself from my bitTorrent active downloads.
I was 4 and a half gigs into a 7 gig torrent, and the half complete torrent is still sitting in my "Incomplete" folder. However I only seem to be allowed to start over from scratch.
There must be a fix to allow me to start from where I finished.

re-download the exact same torrent file. when it opens in uTorrent or whatever torrent program you're using, it'll ask you where you want to save the file. just point it to the location where the half finished download is, it'll do a hash check and then start from where it left off.
That worked a treat.
