Tell Mels What Linux For OLD PII

I just got my hands on a MINT Pentium 2 PC from WAY back. Not sure about the detail yet. I just booted it up to make sure it worked and it had Windows 98 installed from 1996! This thing came from a Doctors estate who died a while back. This old PC is like brand new and it looks like its loaded! I got a monitor with it and the thing is HUGE and heavy! It looks like at least 20 inches...I bet that monitor was $500+ back in the high dollar days.

I am gonna dig back into this ancient rig later and see how much ram it has and how fast the CPU is...I am betting its in the 333ghz range. I want to instal a fast Linux set up and use this PC as a MAME box to play Pac Man, Ms Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Galaga and on and on. The old schools shiz!

SO what Version should I try? I am thinking of DSL ( Damn Small Linux ) which looks good to me and its says its fast!

I'd go with Puppy, I more or less KNOW that will work woof on a P2 since I've put it on old 400 mhz laptops an it was fine. The reason I'd recommend Puppy is because it's full featured compared to DSL and other baby Linux. http://puppylinux.org

The laptops I had probably started with NT 4.0 and were upgraded to Win 2000 and worked fine with that too. It's just that Puppy has newer things like wi-fi manager, torrent program, personal blog, and Gxine media player which will play many formats. Just don't expect to play mp4 videos larger than about 320x240 because the processor might not be enough.

I was doing the same thing, getting old computers from estate sales, junk stores and the trash, and fixing them up for friends who needed any kind of machine to access the net.

I hope that you do try it, and since it runs from the CD or USB you can see if you like it easily. For my friends I put it on the hard drives, because it makes everything easier and faster to boot.

I found out about it at a Goodwill warehouse sale, just chatting with the computer tech for the store, and he told me about it. I don't if it was because he saw a Dog standing there :puppy_dog_eyes: or what, but when I checked it out at home it really was that good.

It should be pretty easy to install it on a hard disk if you want to, using the Puppy Universal Installer in the menu, but if you have a problem there you can PM me and I'll see if I can help, since I've gone through the install many times in the past few years.

Hey Boomer, or anyone else, have you ever tried or heard much about Puppy Linux Arcade? It looks cool and it sounds good.

Okay Boomer, since you offered your help...

How would I go about installing a Puppy Linux ISO from a USB stick?

    Here you go mels:

    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/install...-from-windows/

There's an app on that page that will prepare and create any Linux.iso into a working USB install.

Also puppy arcade v7 is out now too on the piratebay.
A couple of sites I've been working on if you're interested http://www.howtogetfaster.co.uk, [url]http://www.documentaries.me.uk[url] and a new startup http://thelocalseo.co

I hadn't found out about Puppy Linux Arcade yet, that's totally new! I like the furry characters on that desktop picture too, and what a room they have, it looks so cozy.

Pendrive Linux as Puzzler posted.. that looks good, but you can also check out Unebootin,

    http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

I've used that once or twice to get Ubuntu Netbook Remix on to my little HP. I agree, things are getting exciting, as developers get creative and try different things.

Let me know how Puppy does if you try it.
