    Question Suggestions

I have an Acer Aspire 1640 laptop, with XP SP3. It was formatted recently, but the sound is very glitchy. I have tried various codec packs, installed directx, updated all system drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled the sound driver. Nothing seems to work. I have sound but it's all jarbled at best. All sounds, including system sounds are messed up.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Out of curiosity, have you tried a live boot CD to see if the sound is garbled there too?
I'm assuming (ugg) that the sound was working fine before the format?

Yes, the sound was working fine before the format. I am not at home, so I do not have access to any bootable discs. I am able to burn a disc. Is there something you recommend for easy download?

Do you have a shotgun and a couple of shells?

It may not fix the sound but it will sure make you feel a lot less frustrated.

I use to own guns, but gave up hunting years ago. I would like to try bow hunting someday.

Nah, this laptop isn't worth a bullet. I wish I knew what is wrong with it though.

Did you wash your hands before you reformatted? Sounds like a "dirty" install.

    Try....

    - Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager
    - Extend the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers group
    - Right click on Primary IDE and hit Uninstall
    - Reboot the computer, the Primary IDE drivers will re-install themselves after you reboot.
    - Go back to the Device Manager and extend the same group again.
    - Right click on Primary IDE Channel and go to Properties > Advanced Settings tab.
    - Make sure that both Device's Modes are on "DMA if available".

Look at the speaker arrangement settings, its usually in the manufacturers console, make sure it matches your speaker set up. If its set to 7.1 when you are using 2.1 it might screw up the sound as its thinking you have other speakers to process voices and certain ranges. There is also a setting in Windows that needs to be changed, but I have no knowledge of where it is in xp.

have you tried plugging in a pair of headphones? how's it sound with them on? i'd take a close look at the drivers to see if they're the right ones. did you restart after uninstalling before reinstalling drivers?

On second thought, I bet your recycle bin is full. You may want to check that out. Ive seen it dozens of times and its called the "recycle sound syndrome". Check it out.

I would like to thank everyone else for their input. El C nailed it. I figured it was a driver issue, but I would have never checked IDE drivers.

El C, I take it you had a similar problem before? Well regardless, thanks again!

Yeah, I never would have thought to do that and it seems like some mumbo jumbo...lol Glad it worked out. Having no sound or bad sound ( same thing ) is worthless!

I thought for sure I had it with the "recycle sound syndrome" . So many times that will fix it right there. After you follow those steps in that link you will NEVER want sound again!
