Microsoft has denied that Windows Updates are to blame for reports of so-called Black Screens of Death.
The problem was raised by British security firm Prevx, which claimed Windows Updates had invalidated several key registry entries, resulting in PCs booting with a black screen displaying only an Explorer window.
However, both Microsoft and Prevx claim that further investigations have exonerated the Windows Updates from blame.

when i first heard about this news, i actually wondered. i had the updates installed, but everything was just hunky dory. pinned it down to perhaps some kind of compatibility issue at the time, who'd have thunk a security firm forgot to look up malware!! shame on them IMO.
speaking of security, have any of you tried security essentials? it freakin' rocks! low memory footprint, effective, and non intrusive, WHY would anyone want to pay or go for any other antivirus? MSE + common sense = peace of mind. i'm glad MS have finally taken responsibility for the security of their OS. at the prices they charge, they damn well better provide a decent AV with their OS.
