Users should delay Windows 7 upgrade, support firm warns (ComputerWorld)

Computerworld - Users should wait for Microsoft to work out the bugs in Windows 7 before jumping on the new operating system, a Syracuse, N.Y.-based computer support company said today.

"From the calls we're getting, as well as our own experience in the past with all Microsoft's operating systems, we're recommending that people stick with their time-tested OS and wait for the dust to settle," said Josh Kaplan, president of Rescuecom.

Citing a litany of reasons, ranging from the risk of losing data during an upgrade to tough economic times, Kaplan urged Windows users to put off upgrading to Windows 7 or buying a new PC with the operating system pre-installed. "There are some compelling reasons for both businesses and home users to move to Windows 7," Kaplan said, "so we're saying 'just wait for a bit.'"

Upgrading an existing machine -- whether it's running the eight-year-old Windows XP or the much newer Vista -- is particularly risky, he added, especially if users haven't taken time to make a full backup before they migrate their machines.

I remember Vista being the same way. Wait for SP1 first. Don't jump in right away because Microsoft hasn't worked out the kinks yet. SP1 came and went and problems persisted. Then, Windows 7 started to make it's appearance with promises that THIS time, they'd get it right. I don't know why, but I just have a bad feeling about this.

Eh? I am upgrading an old PC I just peiced together from XP to 7 so I can evaluate Winturd 7. I hope its nice like people say it is. Took me FOREVER to get this old pc back together because of a stupid error on my part but i finally traced it back to a bad IDE connection! UGZZZ! I felt so stupid! The connector was one pin slot out of socket! DUH!!! Just had to think about it for two seconds and decide to go back through the PC to find what I could have F'ed up when I put it back together. I cam to this conclusion afer I found an old hard drive that I knew worked and stuck it in and still the thing would not show up as having a working hard drive installed. Old head-ache over, now its time for a new one! So far the set up is going smooth.

Windows 7 installed quickly with no problems over XP on an old PC. Its starting up nice too. I started the upgrade from when I posted the first post and it finished completely just before this one, unattended!!! NICE. Looks cool but now I have to give it a test run and see what happens!

Aside from very old programs we use at work, everything works great in windows 7. I did a clean install at my home and work, so I can't comment on upgrading, but I've always been against upgrading from one OS to another, clean install is always preferred by me.

I've upgraded a few of my clients to Win7 as well, and have yet to recieve a complaint or problem stemming from Win7.

I say, if you can do it, no reason not to, unless you just dont want to upgrade.

Oh, and XP mode does NOT work 100% like advertised. The old programs we use work fine on XP, but will NOT work in 'XP mode'.

    Talking

Well please forgive my whoring manner but I am finding this sexy as HELL! Very quick and responsive not to mention PRETTY! I think I will go ahead and install it over my OS on this PC as well as it kept all my files on my other PC with no problem despite some of the gripes I had seen some non pimp peeps make. They must have been idiots and its hard to make an idiot proof product.

This is like having a couple of newish PC's in the house. I can only imagine how people who install Windows 7 over Vistank must feel. Their PC will be whizzing about like a space shuttle with the NITRO button stuck engaged! Get rid of that VISTANK and get with the program! You probably bought a SUPER COMPUTER just to run VISTANK and now MS has made it right, after the fact and after they tricked people into buying crap they did not need but I digress...

I know its early for me to give this kind of review but I can only imagine how fast a Vista machine will work with this OS!! SEXXXY SEXXXY! I plan on finding out over the weekend if a friend will let me play! I am also gonna jack my sisters pc up and see what happens. Some of these Vistank PC's are running 12Gigs of RAM or more which is ridiculously ludicrous! This old pc is FLYING with 2 gigs but I aint pushing it yet. I am gonna try running two or more demanding programs later and see whats up. I am sure it will take it but I will see just how much I can get away with here. With 12Gigs of RAM I could cure cancer! How they sold that TURD to geeks is BEYOND reason. Still some will argue it was the right OS for the time...BS BS BS! It was a turd pushed on the public to sell PC's and LOTS OF RAM!!!! Get smart or throw your money my way!

Im off to grab a slice of PIZZA or a TACO! Which ever has the shartest line...

I think your lap top would LOVE W7!!!!

Its an AMD 64 3000+ 2G of Ram and an ATI agp 9800 GPU. Not terribly old but dated. It still does anything that most people would ever want a PC to do, including me, and if I would not happened to have feel assbackwards into a new PC ( courtesy of the GEEK SQUAD hillbillies ) I would still be clutching it with all my might. I keep a PC until it falls apart. I still have another PC thats much older that I plan on restoring: a 1.333GHz AMD with 512Megs of RAM, that I will upgrade maybe, that I will try Windows 7 on too. I gave away the damn graphics card I had on it so I will have to use onboard graphics and possible replace the mobo battery because it has not had power in over 5 years. I want that baby back up and performing because it was always a work horse despite its modest speed. That thing could multi task like no ones business for some reason. It will be so fun seeing it fire back up.

Shoe nuff! Its like XP but better. This is what Billy boy should have done in the first jump. Making better software that makes even old hardware run better. Thats what good software should do. Vistank was junk and was a very shitty engineered POS. Of course I contend that it was on purpose because it was never necessary to make an OS that caused PC's to run like shit with the most minimal of improvements. That doesnt even make sense. It was inferior in every aspect except perhaps looks.

I am puzzled on what I have been reading now. I upgraded my old shit from XP to W7 and it kept most of my files but not the settings. From what I am reading before putting W7 on my main rig is that I can NOT upgrade my XP to W7 and expect to keep my files even though I already did just that! Did I get lucky? Well actually I did not even want to keep all those files. I thought they would be gone but they are still there and I have to clean it up myself. Anyone else been able to keep all their files when they upgraded from XP or did everyone do a clean install?

EDIT! btw, what Windows 7 does is dump all your files into a folder called OLD WINDOWS! You then must reinstall all your old shit but it DOES SAVE YOUR FILES AND STUFF!

Anyway, I still haven't gotten my disc in the mail, but when I get it I expect it to run only a little better than Vista. So far Vista has never really given me issues, its ram usage is about 200mb more than XP, every other resource usage was on par or better than XP.

this is a commmon theme with Vista, I found it to be a resource hog but still able to run. some people have never had issues with it.

I personally stick by the concept of Vista being bloatware and it's release was not to give us better windows but along the lines mels said to sell over priced hardware that was "Vista Ready"

Since Intel abandoned thier Pentium numbering scheme along with the faster is better mantra, they had to come up with something to make people upgrade thier physical hardware. The trend was starting to be about not better hardware but more efficent use of hardware already being sold in the market.

Now 7 is reportedly the new Xp as Vista should have been and I have heard in the wild that Win 7 can also run on as little as 512 megs of ram and minimal video memory.

not offially understand but from the mouths of the users online, try that with a copy of vista and a laptop in most cases if it was more than 2 years old would choke and die

Probably so MS can cram W7 into every portable device you can carry around. The only way to please Mountain Rage ( THE DOUCHE NOZZLE ) is to not have an opinion other than his. One minute he hates Vistank the next he adores it. Depending on what I post...
