"It was the best of operating systems, it was the worst of operating systems. When it comes to the merits of Windows 7, it looks like Slate's Farhad Manjoo and PC Magazine's John Dvorak are going to have to agree to disagree. Manjoo gives Windows 7 a big thumbs-up (a sincere one, unlike Linus!), calling it a 'crowning achievement,' while Dvorak is less than impressed, saying, 'Win 7 is really just a Vista martini. The operating system may have two olives instead of one this time out, but it's still made with the same cheap Microsoft vodka.' So, for those of you who've had a chance to check things out, are things really different this time?"
Multiple readers have also pointed out that there have been problems with the download and installation of Windows 7 upgrades obtained through the student discount offer, which Microsoft has confirmed.

I foresee Microsoft releasing a new OS in a year or two and offering discounts to disenchanted Windows 7 and windows Vista users in the future.

Well from what I gather Dvorak is simply not a fan of Microsoft, so it probably doesn't matter what they come out with, he will still despise it. But I have to agree with the Windows 7 student update, whoever they are working with for the release did a terrible job programming the decryption, setup program. They could of avoided many issues by offering a .ISO download, rather than whatever kind of messed up proprietary system they decided to go with. Anyway, I'm sure there must be a way to get the download burnt, but I choose to just wait for my hard copy to arrive than waste my time.

so what if they've used vista as a template? at least for once they listened to the community, ironed out issues and delivered a stunning OS in win7.
i don't know about the disenchanted users bit, but MS could force a new OS on us every year or so by discontinuing support for old versions. this could turn out to become a real pain you know where.
It's tough for people to be objective about it. The reality is that the reviled Vista worked well for millions of people, and Windows 7 has many bugs, so for many, Vista was better, although after a couple of years, it slowed down as do all OS's.
