Windows 7 Cheap price for college students

Not sure how many other college students there are here on zeropaid, but I figured this might be useful for some of you. Microsoft is offering the Windows 7 upgrade for only 30$ to college students in the United states effective immediately. Other countries are also going to be given a discount (prices vary) but must wait until October 22nd to get the discount.

October seems like a very wierd time to try and sell a new OS to students. I suppose for a run-up to Christmas, but otherwise it seems like a really wierd time to start selling it to them.

It is coinciding with the Windows 7 official release date of October 22nd.

If its $30 in Canada, or around that price I will probably upgrade both my desktop and laptop. So I'll probably buy it Oct 22nd but not upgrade it till the end of term. Just need to check the compatibility with my tablet. But if anything I think it will have better compatibility since 7 has better built in tablet functionality. It will also give me the benefit of wiping out the hp crap ware that came with my laptop. Why can't they give OEM discs with systems like they used to, I don't want a back up when I buy a laptop I want a fresh install disc.

I know that Millenium computers came with a book and a backup disk, and I think that Early XP might have too. When we upgraded to two XP computers in late 2006 you had to burn your own restores on to two CDs for each machine. The backups had the same junkware on the desktop as when you bought it.. ;)

I guess they started doing it that way once all computers started to come with CD writers, and I'm sure it saves them money that way.

I know why they do it, I was just venting. Hell I'd pay $10 for the disc when buying a machine. It would be worth it in my opinion and they would generate revenue in the process.

With Vista they eventually had Ultimate upgrade for $70 for students, wouldn't surprise me to see something similar. But to be honest with vista, the Ultimate features were useless, for what I'm doing anyway.

As it was, I never found the difference between home and professional on XP, but I just feel a bit more comfortable knowing that I'm running the best I can. I do not want to find in the future that I can't do something because I didn't spend enough on my OS. I would rather just pirate a new one then. If that happens, then I wasted my money on the lower end OS.

I'll also be damned if I invalidate my XP disk because I upgraded it to a new OS. I may never use it again in the future since 7 is as good as it is, but why risk it? It's better to spend a few more bucks and be legally allowed to run 2 PCs than to only be allowed to legally run one.

Dunno if any of you are fans of tinyxp but there is already a tiny7 released.
Running it on this machine, a lowly 1 ghz p4 with 1gb ram and it runs smooth and quick. All the networking services are disabled by default, but the nfo explains how to restore them if you need'em.

i love tinyXP, been using it for a year now on my main box without issues (bare version) and though my machine is "old", it's by no means underpowered. just love the way programs start up instantly, and how it zips (no pun intended) through compression jobs.

i heard about a few issues on tiny vista and gave it a pass. also don't have the time to give tiny7 a go, but at ~700mb, i have some serious concerns about functionality. even experience posted about a possible dvd version, think i'll wait till that comes out.

for those who're wondering, these versions do fall under a legal gray area, but if you have your own license, you can enter it and reap the benefits of these versions.

Updated the information above. As it turns out they are only allowing students to upgrade 1 computer (DAMN IT MICROSOFT!), I know a lot of students that have both a desktop and laptop, they have to pay full price for at least one upgrade.
