does anyone know of a good HD quality ripper and re encoder to avi, i do know of dvd shrink and few others but how do you get a 4gb file movie to 700mbs+
The closes I have been able to get is 900M before the image got blocky and video/audio sinc got bad.
I used AlltoAvi and Alive Video Converter when I tried to do it. Both had just about the same results around 900M before the file became unwatchable.
It can be done, but you will need to recode it to another codec like H264 or Divx. It will only be watchable on your PC, and certain DVD players that have those codecs enabled.
One program I recommend is Xvid4PSP. It was initially designed for making videos for the PSP game system, but it expanded into a pretty universal transcoding program. Just be sure to install the Combined Community Codec Pack, and the Y12 decoder from the Divx codec, and you will be able to compress your DVDs to small files.
On another note, I've never seen an AVI function to DVD shrink.
Try Doctor Divx (http://sourceforge.net/projects/drdivx/)
When I was still concerned about hard drive space, I used this to create .avi movies.
You can adjust the quality by file size, so you can choose 700 MB etc.
But as mentioned above, the smaller the file size, the lower the quality.
