Sharing Hard Drives on Other Computers on Same Network

So I upgraded my XP and Vista computers to 1GBps ethernet cards and I also had to upgrade my router to a DLink wireless N router that had 1 GBps ports in it.

My XP computer out in the living room I have a hard drive in it set to Shared as RDrive. It's under WORKGROUP and the name of that computer is desktop2

When I go to my Vista computer and try typing in \\desktop2\RDrive it will NOT load it!! This was just working before I upgraded everything and I can't figure out what is wrong!

HOwever, if I go to the computer with XP on it and tell it to grab a shared hard drive that is on the Vista computer, it picks it up just fine!

Vista says it's connected to "Network" even though my network name is "MyTouch" does this matter? I set it to MyTouch under the dlink settings by going to 192.168.0.1 Maybe this has something to do with it?

Any ideas why Vista wont pick up the shared hard drive on the XP computer?

I have no idea what your problem is. I just set up my new computer to read my old PC's drives as network drives and there was no such issues. Have you got some sort of permission restrictions on it accidentally?

I remember when Vista came out, I heard it was a bitch to network with an XP computer. There's probably lots of info on it if you google it. I'm sure there must be a way. You must have missed something.

Lol, when my friends got vista, they said networking was the only thing MS got right with vista.

For one, the computers have to be in the same workgroup.

1) Set the workgroup* name on BOTH PC's to be the same name and do step 2.

2) and this is probably the clincher, you need to install the LLTD update in Windows XP. Go to this Microsoft Windows link to download the LLTD update (KB922120), after that double-click the downloaded installation file to start the installation. When you finish the installation, go to your Add or Remove Programs window, you will notice Update for Windows XP (KB922120) has been installed. Do this and REBOOT the XP machine.

3) Make sure you have a shared folder on each PC

4) In XP > Folder Options > View - place a checkmark in "Always search for network folders and printers" and DESLECT "Use simple file sharing" > Apply > OK.

5) Open a copy of explorer on each PC

6) Click on My Network Places on both PCs and see if your workgroup shows up, and if you can browse to the other PC.

7) If that's still a no go, check your firewall settings on both PCs. If you use a 3rd party firewall, double check that the Windows Firewall is disabled!

This is in error. What workgroup* you are in and what the name of your linksys network is are not the same. My router network name is SLACKVILLE and my workgroup name is LINKSYS*, and they will never meet or marry or have kids.

Still no luck. However, now on my Vista computer when I right-click on my computer and go to map network drive it automatically finds DESKTOP2. But when I click the little arrow to expand DESKTOP2, it says there's a problem and for me to check the spelling or hit diagnose. I do that, and still nothing =(

Before though I never did see the DESKTOP2! So we are getting somewhere!

And on the XP computer I can STILL access the Vista's shared drives, but I still CAN'T get Vista to read the shared drives on the XP computer :-/

When the diagnose is complete it says it "Cannot communicate with desktop2 (192.168.x.xxx)

So I can ping the Vista computer from the XP computer but Vista can't ping the XP computer =(

Okay, so this is what I did. I upgraded the living room computer to Vista Home Basic. I shared my extra hard drive that is in there and FINALLY my other Vista Ultimate 64 bit computer was able to find the other shared drive!

However, everytime I try to connect to it by typing in \\Desktop2\RDrive it asks me for a username / password even though there is NO username/password for that computer.

Is there a way to turn this off so it stops asking and just have it connect to the shared hard drive?

Man, your shit is fucked. I've only ever had that pop up when there are no share folders on the PC I'm trying to access.

I've figured it out. I just got done talking to my IT guy at work and he said I need to go to the user groups on my Vista Home Basic computer and add the same "administrator" account that my main computer is on and then that will open the flood gate so they can go back and forth and no more password boxes will pop up. yay! I can't wait to get home and get this completed!
