Here's an Australian physics teacher using principles of molecular physics (the "packing fraction") to "shark" games where you are asked to guess the number of M&Ms (or, presumably, other ellipsoid candy) in a jar.

Another good way to understand closed packing crystal structure is with a neocube. Anyone studying molecular structures would to well to buy one.
I love how I know about everything he was talking about, but can't remember the processes.
