'Cannabis alters human DNA' -- new study (Eurek Alert)

A new study published by University of Leicester researchers has found "convincing evidence" that cannabis smoke damages DNA in ways that could potentially increase the risk of cancer development in humans.

Using a newly developed highly sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method, the University of Leicester scientists found clear indication that cannabis smoke damages DNA, under laboratory conditions.

They have now published the findings in the journal Chemical Research in Toxicology1.

The research was carried out by Rajinder Singh, Jatinderpal Sandhu, Balvinder Kaur, Tina Juren, William P. Steward, Dan Segerback and Peter B. Farmer from the Cancer Biomarkers and Prevention Group, Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine and Karolinska Institute, Sweden.

Well, I was a very heavy smoker in the 70's. My daughter turned out fine. And she was a big stoner in the 90's, and she has three kids that came out fine too. That's proof enough for me!!

I learned Photoshop and Maya stoned off my ass. I used to sit down for hours at a time with those tutorial DVD's and a big bag of weed.

I no longer smoke weed (due to pesky drug tests at work), but everything I learnt, I learnt was done while stoned off my ass.

(And no, I haven't forgotten any of it).

Also covered: we are talking about possible cancer causing mutations, and these mutations would be localized by contact with the smoke. Hello lung cancer, lip cancer, mouth cancer, and throat cancer.

Urgh, I hate that!

Mind you for a while the only weed we could get was coated in Brix+ (Sugar solution designed to bump up profits for the commercial growers) Completely unsmokable.

Although before Brix+ came along we were getting weed that was contaminated with GLASS! FFS.

There was a series of major bust before all this happened, which pretty made the whole of the UK dry. It was impossible to get any uncontaminated weed for a good while after.

If it smells like hay, I seriously doubt its BC hydro. There are lots of outdoor operations in BC that grow various strains of pot. It goes to all parts of the country and even out of the country. People just pass it off as the best BC bud, because it sells better. You have no guarantees. nada!

I've seen some excellent outdoor strains, as I've grown for many years myself. Even hydroponically grown weed has many many different strains. There are strains that have been grown in BC for decades, but how does one know if it's a BC strain or Hawaiian or South American? Do you?

Even indoor hydroponics has several methods of producing all different kinds and levels of potencies. So many variables!! There's also the dealer's end of it... "Oh yeah, this is awesome BC bud dude". My friend grows it himself!!" "Sure, I believe you!!" How do you know? Just because some dude says it is, does that make it Columbian or British Columbian?

Trust me, good BC bud is not something you would know unless you personally grow or know the grower personally. Each grower has their own secrets and methods for growing. What clones do I use? Where do you get the clones? And most importantly, what strain are the clones? How long have I been cloning a particular strain?

The bottom line is that even in BC you can find good weed grown by pros and shit weed grown by amateurs. Some use natural fertilizers some don't. Some flush the weed of fertilizers properly, some don't. Improper methods can produce shit tasting weed too. So many variables!!

So if your BC bud smells like hay, it's because it could have been one of many outdoor or indoor strains from anywhere. Was it grown by amateurs or pros? That is the big question. With such a demand and huge profit to be made, new cultivators are popping up everywhere. Many are operated now by gangs.
