Younger Canadians lead migration away from land lines: StatsCan (CBC)

More than a third of younger people living on their own have dumped their land line in favour of mobile phones, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada.

Eight per cent of Canadian households have cellphones but no land line, according to the December 2008 figures from Statistics Canada's Residential Telephone Service Survey.

But that number jumps to 34.4 per cent when looking at households composed solely of 19- to 34-year-olds. Only 4.5 per cent of other households have given up their land lines in favour of cellphones.

The survey also found about two-thirds of cellphone-only households were renters, and not homeowners.

The thing that drives me nuts is the young people at work stopping every so often to do some texting while on the job - especially while operating heavy equipment. ARGH!

Changes will be forthcoming just like on the public roads. The sad fact is that the laws (or rules as it applies to work) have to be enacted in order to prevent injury or death to these same people who abuse their common sense. Then one wonders why we have so many stupid laws?

I'm currently working with an individual who seems to like to take a short break to call people while working. Its annoying me cause I want to work and this guy is slacking off. As for cellphone use while using anything motorized I have a solution for that problem.

Put an accelerometer in the phone, and set up a zone around the driver seat. If the phone is answered while the vehicle is in motion the individual is instantly ejected onto oncoming traffic. I'll name it the Darwin Commissioner.

I love this idea.The only problem is speed would have to be increasing.

LMAO!!! I'd so go for that idea myself too!

I can admit to being a techno-geek in public, but c'mon, some of these people look like complete idiots texting while on the job - not to mention fuelling this internal urge to shove that cellphone down the nearest compactor (the one time I have ever had rage against technology). iPod's while on the job is bad enough, cellphone's are ten times worse. At least with the iPod, you're eyes are on the nearest forklift about to skewer you right in the gut and have time to get out of the way. How hard is it to hit the 'off' button when at work (or at lectures for that matter). It's moments like this that I wish everyone was forced to use a land-line due to technological limitations.

I work hard day in and day out in real life without the need to have contact with someone outside of work every hour. Why is that so hard for some of these people I see at work?

i dunno, just never will be a big cellphone fan. i own one for emergencies only, can't see why people are addicted to them. a recent survey found that a large number of women would rather give up their spouse than their cellphone- how sick is that?
