Angry Parliament refuses to fund probe into info access (Canada.com)

OTTAWA — Canada's information watchdog says his office won't have the resources to probe systemic problems with the federal access to information system after the government refused to fully grant a request for more funding.

And Information Commissioner Robert Marleau suggests that resentment among government officials to his annual departmental report cards could be one reason behind the snub.

The information commissioner investigates complaints by people who believe they have been denied rights under the Access to Information Act, which requires that federal departments disclose public records upon request, subject to a number of exemptions.

This year, the amount of new and ongoing funding granted to Marleau's office will fall nearly $1 million short of what he requested. In particular, he was denied a request for an additional $360,000 to investigate "systemic" issues with access-to-information compliance.

Heaven forbid Canadians get to know what their own government is up to. Thank you Mr. Harper for eliminating accountability.:angryfire:

I find Canadian politics so amateurish and funny. While the Americans have Obama, we've been blessed with some Albertan yo-yo who is fixed on breaking up the country and exploit the power while he still has it. His incredulous distaste for the press and the media on top of his micro-management style of the inner caucus speaks of his inability to lead by actions and hope.
    Who is Stephan Harper?

I sure don't like him and everything he stands for. I know he is a politician but from his many actions I don't think he has Canada's best interest in sight.

We desperately need election reform in Canada. Either we will keep getting misrepresentation in parliament, or we will head into a two party system, neither of which are good. Damn it I wish the green party had a chance, their beliefs are much more inline with what I want from a government.

Remove the control and funding of the Privacy and Information Commission from government's hands and problem shall be solved.
