Anyone have an SSD Hard drive?

I plan on getting one next week if my bill work out or at least with in a month and wondered did anyone else have one yet. I am only gonna get a 64Gig model because all I plan on putting on it is my OS and programs and that is all anyone should put on them because you should not keep re-writing over these drives [ DO NOT DEFRAG THEM EITHER! I have seem demo's of doing this and there are clear warning to not do this as it is BAD for SSD drives. Do not use tune up tools on them either ]. Anywho... I have seen the youtube demo's of start up times and thats all good and dandy but thats a very small part of the advantage. Watch a video of people firing up intense programs...like photo editing etc and see how fast that start! INSTANT! Its like turning on a light bulb. I saw a guy start up 50 programs in seconds ( well... under a minute)!


If you use a lot of intense demanding programs an SSD drive is a choice you should look into. In my opinion all hard drives that run an operating system should be kept bare bones. I have said this for years. Use your external for all downloaded files and you PC will keep running smooth and fast. If you keep jumbling up your main HD or keep it full your PC will perform like a yucky turd! [ all turds are yucky but it will perform like a more yucky than usual turd ]


Back on topic... anyone made the leap to SSD yet? No need to buy a new pc anymore. Most newish pc from the last few years are fine and hardware upgrades are all you may want to consider. CPU's are reaches a level where they will be able to do anything that is required and I do not see any application that will required a CPU upgrade. Video games may require one in a few years but most GPU's are perfectly capable of handling the load. The PC makers...how will they survive? I guess the geeks who always want to outdo each other for not other reason than they get jealous will have to support the Dells and others out there. If it aint broke don't replace it!


SSD! I can't wait! I do plan on boasting when I get it myself. I know people who have bough PC beasts because others had upgraded and all they use their "beast" for is playing WoW! Thats seriously mental!!

Played with a few on a few setups, very nice. Great performance!

Side note: Make sure you turn off auto defrag, since in Vista (and maybe 7 too) its on by default when you load up the OS.

Yes...turn off any auto- frag options and any optimization software or you will eventually ruin your SSD drive. You have to remember that these drives are a different animal. In some ways they are much more durable and reliable but there are also ways the user can use them to shorten their life span as well. Do your research and obey the recommendations. Also get it out of your head that bigger is better. This is a falsehood the PC makers have been harping on for years. For your main drive smaller is better/BEST. The smaller space your drive has to search for the key to start up and run the better. Huge HD's are CRAP! :yell: Use a second big drive for backup storage and always jerk off before any big date! :smlove2:

and you would be correct! Although I would probably trust an SSD drive by them since it has no moving parts. They don't have an SSD now so its not an option. I am going to order a Pony I believe. Most places do not keep these in stock, even Best Buy, and you must order them. I am going to get mine off Ebay or Tiger direct.

I'm fine with my raid set up, it gives me about a 50% boost from using just one HD.

Raid set up can be very fast indeed and if I had mine set up like that I would not even think about upgrading...But since I do not I can not wait to get an SSD! Having all my programs start instantly will be so nice! Especially photo editing and I am really interested in how movie editing software will perform.

Nothing definite yet. I am not a big new egg fan because of sometimes getting used hardware. I looked at Tiger Direct and Ebay. I will likely get it on Ebay because its just easy for me. It will probably come down to who has the cheapest over night shipping though.

I want to get the Pny 64 Gig. Hold a secong though, I need to find one I was looking at...

Just read one review that didn't sound outstanding. I guess this is why its cheaper. I am not going to try and save a buck on a component this important. FORGET THAT BUSINESS! I will buy the more expensive Pony which I have read is way faster than the specs they give. Cancel the Corsair post!

SSD technology is undoubteldy the next step in storage solutions, as the reign of high speed traditional hard disk drives begins to come to an end. SSDs offer better reliability, faster read/write times, far reduced size and temperature out puts too.

One problem with SSDs remains though, and that's the high price. Corsair is taking a step in the right direction by announcing the impending release of64GB SSD with a price of €133.

Corsair’s M64 SSD 64GB, 2.5 inch drive read and write times arn't as good as many SSDs, only coming in at 90MB/s read and 70MB/s write; though this is faster than most HDDs available.

With the cost sill incredibly high though, it's tough to consider an SSD, when a one terrabyte hard disk drive can be picked up for well under a hundred pounds.

With SSDs, I'm primarily concerned with wear and tear (write cycles). I worry about the longevity of these devices, especially in the context of being used for running operating systems.

I'll wait a bit until the technology improves on this front. For now I'll stick with regular hard drives.

If you use one just for an OS then you should not have any wear and tear. Once you put the OS on it I don't see any reason to be deleting it over and over again. I can see adding updates from time to time but that should not effect anything and will not be harmful. There are many misconceptions with these drives and lots of bad information out there.

When I get mine I am gonna buy a 64Gig model ( actually WAY too large IMO ) and keep another 7200 rpm internal HD for keeping my games on but most of my downloads will go straight to external drives.

The PC I use now only has the OS on the main HD because I like to keep it clean and very fast. I do not know why everyone does not do this. It seems everyone has been tricked into buying huge 500Gig HD's for their master drives which, in my opinion, is the WORST thing to do. Buying a huge HD for the master drive makes peoples PC's perform badly and when they then fill that drive full of BS too it makes their box a POS. It baffles me. I guess people can not rationalize for themselves how things should be and let the geek squad ruin an otherwise awesome PC.

My PC may be two years old with less RAM than many other people here but I bet my PC runs a Hell of a lot better than most peoples now that I have got all the kinks ironed out.

BTW, just so you know Ken...I recently got lucky and received this PC I am using from a lady who was told, by the Best Buy Geeks, that this PC was completely shot and worthless but all that was wrong was it was loaded with a few very bad virus'. I added another drive to it to set it up like I mentioned above and now it ROCKS! Very solid, fast and AWESOME!!!!!!

My netbook has an 8gig SDD. It's part of the low-footprint, higher performance setup w/ Atom based systems. Though, I think I'd be better off still if I stripped the XP on it a little more.
