(I'm putting this in the A/V forum because it's for the handling of equipment and hardware, and I'm inquiring about using a satellite dish to do that. But if it needs to be moved that's cool.)
Ok - I have a small DishTV satellite on my garage that is not in use. I do not have a digital receiver yet, but I'm doing my research for what the options are and what specifically would be best for me.
What I want to do, is get a cheap but decent digital satellite TV receiver and hook it up to that dish in the back and point it at a Canadian free-to-air TV satellite. The research I've done so far says that after I've done that, all I'll need to do after that is download the bin files and/or codes to a flashdrive, and then plug that into the digital receiver, boot it, and away we go. Canadian satellite TV for free... some 500 channels in some cases.
Does anyone here do something like this? Know about it? Have any advice?
I live in MN which is further north and closer to Canada than most, so it may be easier for me but I'm not sure.
Here are a couple resources I've found so far:
fta-gods - helpful forum and files resource.
Free Sat TV a Myth - first page I read, has some helpful newbie info, but not nearly what I was looking for.
I'll figure it out eventually, but if anyone wants to help or offer advice I'm all ears. What do you guys think?
People standin on top of the white house, there's people standin up on capital hill...
They stand up there, sound like they know something...
They all still wake up in the morning, drink a cup of coffee and take a shit, they aint better than I am.
And they dance around a problem... say this... talk about the eco-nomic imp-li-cations...
But their grandfather, great great grandfather, was just like my great great grandfather, just a bunch of monkeys swingin up in trees shittin in the woods.
I thought about getting one about a year ago, never did get around to it tho. Good luck.

Here is your starting point.
The second link regarding free to air sat signal is a bunch of BS. You'll need a motor with a larger dish. 18" dish is alright for certain signals but I would recommend 33" dish.
Here is an interesting description on an OTA antenna.
Pm me if you want more info.
i used to use progdvb with yankse/fenrir with a hauppauge nexus card.
