Unhappy Installing Vista Service Pack 1 Was a Bad Idea

I was holding off on installing the first service pack for Windows Vista until yesterday. Apparently, holding off was a very good idea.

I finally decided to install service pack 1 and continued on my merry computing way. I was finished with my laptop at one point, so I hit the Funciton F1 key for it to go into sleep mode. The whole OS gave me a BSOD and started up my session again. Knowing there was a work around, I closed down all the programs that has caused this in the past and tried to make it go into sleep mode again. BSOD/restart.

I knew at this point that this was the result of SP1, so I closed down every single window that was on my task bar and made it go into sleep mode. THe OS BSOD's on me a third time, so I do a hardware shutdown due to lack of patience at the time.

I get home and let the OS complain that I didn't shut the system down properly, so I let it boot back up. Later on last night when I was done with my laptop, I close every program on the task bar and attempt to go into sleep mode. I get my 4th BSOD. So, I go into my system tray and close down every program I ever started up and attempted to put it into sleep mode again. After getting my 5th BSOD, I was getting really annoyed.

Since every program was shut down, I thought that it was pointless not to try and just get the OS to do a shutdown instead. To my absolute shock, after I use the start menu to shut down, the OS Bluescreens on me a 6th time and restarts.

So after installing service pack 1, I have now lost the ability to do a proper shut down. I can only do a hardware shut down at this point in time which makes the OS complain that I didn't shut the computer down properly.

Glad I don't have your luck with computers, service pack 1 works fine on both my desktop and laptop. Have you tried uninstalling service pack 1?

I'm actually looking in to the problem and apparently a user found a workaround to the issue. The only setback is that the battery power get's used up a little faster in Sleep Mode.

This is a KNOWN problem with the 1525 (those models with Dell Wireless adapters - those with Intel adapters are fine). In any event:

    1) Open Device Manager
    2) Expand the Network Adapters section
    3) Double click on your WIRELESS adapter
    4) Click on the Power Management tab, and UNcheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
    Source

Apparently, Dell and Microsoft can't be bothered to fix the problem. glad to know that this whole nightmare wasn't on my end. Thankfully, God created Google. ;)

Edit: And yes, I was stupid enough to use a Dell Inspiron 1525 for the last two years.

Damn, it's my experience with Windows ME all over again! I would crash on shutdown too.
Here's Britney Spears' private jet... The gulf stream 3 doesn't even have a remote control for its surround sound DVD system. Still think downloading music for free isn't a big deal?

Dell has improved issues with Vista but from experience many other brands have had their problems with SP1. I do not expect the situation to improve with the intro of Windows 7 when it's officially released.

    That sucks, bud.

My desktop is Vista SP1 64 bit. Never a problem.

My netbook, however, is XP Home. Though, I rarely use the little sucker for much outside of typing up homework. It's not good for much else, and it's what I bought it for, anyway.
