As expected, plasma screen shipment growth is on track to slow dramatically in 2009, leading more than a few industry analysts to declare that the technology's days in the CE spotlight are numbered unless it refocuses on its strengths.

According to a report released Tuesday by iSuppli, global plasma panel shipments are expected to increase just 6.7 percent this year, that's down from 19.7 percent grow in 2008. The reason, according to iSuppli, is a slowdown in production related to Pioneer and Hitachi leaving the market coupled with a drop off in demand due to the economy.

“Weak consumer spending and business purchases are discouraging plasma panel makers from ramping up production," said Riddhi Patel, iSuppli's principal analyst for television systems. "The economic downturn is affecting both retail and business purchases.”
