I got 2 more letters today

I dont know why there was such a difference in time, the first letter was a complaint for actions on FEB 21, a week later they complained about 2 files dl'd the next day. Crysis and a crack for it. I've already responded that my wireless router was not set up securely and I would try to set it up with better security measures.

If the developers see my new IP can it be traced back to me? All the tracking sites I've tried showed the new IP as in The U.K.

Is this a simple way to effectively keep my online activities untraceable, or should I keep trying new things to find a better solution? Keep in mind that none of the files where dl'd before I got the letters. I have downloaded several movies between notices through my ISP while using the anonymous service. I dont want to keep using the service and find out its not working by getting more letters later. Since I cant get invited to a private tracker I thought this would keep me and my private IP addy from being seen on public share lists. Let me know if I'm wrong before I get banned from my bb server.

Thanks for you thoughts and suggestions if I'm on the wrong track, I need to keep my connection even if it means no more p2p. RTR!

Just my 2 cents but from now on I would totally ignore any letter and act like I never got one. I use to get letters all the time, I would say ive got about 5, and nothing ever came of it. It was always for movies though. The companies mostly want to scare you into stopping because there is no way in hell they can sue millions of people out there. Don't worry about it my man and keep on downloading!

P.S. I say this assuming your ISP doesnt have any kind of three strikes policy where they might disconnect you for this activity. Most do not care because you pay them and as long as they keep getting your money its all they care about. Relax and enjoy

Not a good idea because that would just go back to your
own ISP, since it came from them.

If you actually sent a reply to the complainer you would be
revealing your identity and location to them, practically
begging to be sued by them. You would also be charged
with a criminal offence by the postmaster if you contaminated
    it with any noxious substance.

The best option is always to ignore them completely, even
    if they are inaccurate.

replying to any type of correspondence effectively is an admission to guilt and allows the text originator to step up their legal process. Do not disclose any specifics relating to your connection and/or type of equipment you are using. It mostly helps the other side to gain more information on how to deal with your particular case (if they want you).
If things get too hot, change the ISP and find a better way of downloading the material. P2P is not the only method to acquire the media and also not the safest, as you have found.
Become familiar with technical aspects of using encryption, firewalls and other security strategies which will give you a bit of breathing room. NOTHING is 100% safe but open connections are easily traced and will bite you in the ass once again.
I am not "tooting" my horn but I've downloaded several terrabytes of various material and have not received a letter yet. It still can happen but I don't become complacent and constantly change my methods and sites. Cheers.

I havent responded to the last 2 complaints. The dates they referred to were before the first one arrived so they got my excuse. Whether it was a mistake to blame it on wi-fi or not I dont know. They did say anyone who used my wi-fi would have my addy attached, so I would think that would at least allow me "plausible deniability", for want of a better term.

I'll just keep it cool for a couple of weeks I guess. Then if I get caught again I'll know using an anonymous server didnt help. I have to think the only way they could trace it to me is the public addy seen on p2p clients. If the addy shown is not mine it cant be traced back, right? The only thing my ISP might know is I'm using the anonymous service. After my connection goes through their service they dont know what my ID is if I understand it correctly.

I wouldnt get my feathers ruffled if there was an alternate broadband service available. I'm not someone who has 10,000 songs so its not prosecution I'm afraid of, its losing my ISP. I suppose it could be that they are only doing their duty to developers and distributors and it might take quite a lot of letters before they disconnected me. For the price I'm paying for a connection compared to the amount of bandwidth a TV user requires they're probably happy to have me subscribing.

Hey, this is their job in finding you. So they can build a case against you with your ISP so you can or will get disconnected.

Try using private bt sites or newsgroups. No Cease and Desist letters from any of those two. Of course you can keep on what your doing and find no ISP will keep you connected when they get DMCA against you.

How does a layman know who's a "private tracker". The only ones I can invite myself to are paid, and who can say they are not "sting" sites.

I'm a "technically challenged" person, which I think the majority of p2p users are. Most people dont know how to keep their pc's clean, much less how to seriptitously dl material. I realize most people here are likely above average, but I dont think that goes for most p2p users.

As I said I'll keep my nose clean until after using an anonymous service. Anyone got advice about a free service, like NetConceal or JAP?

Using any free proxy service will usually make your downloads slower than dialup with a bad connection.

I suppose you could use proxy lists you can find if you know where to look, but they have other inherent risks that also take a lot of know how to navigate safely.

Seriously, your best bet is newsgroups.
They take some learning, but nzbs have made them almost as simple to use now as bittorrent.
You will have to pay for service if you want any kind of server retention or limits beyond a couple gig per month in downloads.

But on the upside, virtually zero concern about getting popped, you'll find that you can max your down speed all the time, without ever having to worry about ratio or even uploading at all, and you'll soon realize that the pool of stuff available to you through newsgroups vastly exceeds any p2p network.

If however you decide you'd rather go slow and steady, but free and safe, there are better options than using anonymizing servers.

I'll be happy to fanboi a couple of my favorites for you if you want.

I definitely would not put all my eggs into one basket and that includes Peerguardian. Nothing is 100% full proof.

    Neither is newsgroups
    Peer guardian = newsgroups

If I were you I would take the latter and go legal if you're so worried about it............
