System Restore Saved My Internet Connection!

Well, you might remember my thread about the corrupted HAL.DLL file. I thought the worst of my problems were over, but nooooo, my laptop had to stop recognizing my WLAN card, thus killing my home internet connection completely!

The problems started happening a few weeks ago when I (I believe I started another thread about it) where there was an error message about the WLAN card not being recognized. So I looked up the solution and it was a regedit solution (cring!) After not finding a solution that didn't involve the regedit fix, I went ahead and changed that single number in nsudio's (sp?) start value. That got me reconnected... for a while. Then, suddenly, I lost my connection again. When I ran the Windows diagnoses thing, it said that Windows was not connected to the DNS server. So, the only suggestion that was suggested was to contact the ISP. After a lengthy call and pinging IP addresses in command prompt (which it failed to do so) the (thankfully rather nice IT guy with the Indian accent - by Indian, I mean country India) tried a fair bit to get my connection up and running, but had to reset the connection.

After resetting the damn connection, I was able to connect to the DNS server (had to since it didn't spit out that error message anymore) but I could only browse with IE (gag!) I thought it was a simple matter of resetting the computer to get the other browsers to work (big mistake) I lost the connection completely, even after the regedit sollution.

So, I called someone I know that knows more about computers than I do and we widdled it down to a problem with the RAM somewhere along the line that is causing the issue. So, he recommended something I had no idea about, a system restore. After the restore, I got my connection back (though I had to re-install FireFox and will have to re-install two FL plug-ins again) I restored it back to prior the last Windows Update (not sure if it was it, but it was back when the connection worked, and that seemed to work.

Feels like an eternity since I was last able to connect to the internet from home, but I'm finally back! As a bonus, I didn't have to do the most unbearable process of reformatting the C drive even (which, for the longest time, was seemingly the only solution I had)

Now, on to fixing the stupid desktop.
