    Take over Domain

    Hello all I have been sand bagin this site for awile, thought Id ask you guys a question since you all seem to have alot of knowledge.


    I have been using buydomain to host my website, but now I would like to run a server myself.


    I'm not entirly sure as how to do this, The server it runs on is linux , but I'm most likley going to switch over to windows.


    my main question is how do I obtain my domain and host it myself, what kind o software do I need,


    not really sure what to do so if I sound stupid sorry :)

    If you're using Windows you'll need IIS (and most likely a server version of the OS). For Linux, it's Apache. Forward your ports on your router and preferably put the server in a DMZ and you're done. Keep an eye on your logs or set up some monitoring. Don't forget to patch the OS and the service/daemon.
    For the domain name, you just need to register one and, as long as it's free, it's yours.
