    Angry Sonofabitch!!!!

Dammit! So, after they take away the old tried and true WinMX2.?, the stick us with this 3.? garbage. Fine, I can deal with that, even though the network is nowhere near as stable, and I'm not getting the 100kbps+ downloads like i was before. I got past the whole mysterious shutdown thing. Now it seems like WinMX 3.31 is killing my internet connection after about an hour of ontime. Keep in mind I have a cable connection that is "always on". It's happened many many times these past few weeks, but tonight it really upset me. I found two of the rarest mp3s in the world, two songs that mean a lot to me. And they were hosted by the same guy! So I get in his queue, and later, I just watch all my download and upload speeds drop to zero, before even starting these two particular downloads. So I reset the computer, get back on MX, and have to keep disconnecting the network to find the one with the guy with these two Cool For August mp3's. So, amazingly, I find him. Get back in his queue, although 20+ positions farther behind. What happens an hour later? I watch all my speeds dwindle down to 0! I hate this!!!!!!! I can't find these two mp3's ANYWHERE and this stupid program is pissing me off! Is this a known bug or what?

Whoa! Relax there buddy! I think you're getting a heat stroke in Arizona! Welcome to WinMX, & welcome to ZP! Users need to limit uploads on WinMX so it doesn't suck up all of their bandwidth. If they are indeed rare files, be prepared to be queued. Stay in line & don't move! Another thing you could also do is ask that user politely if he/she could start your download, otherwise, try back another day. Or try an alternative program (preferably a "multi-source" program). I've said this before many times: WinMX requires a lot of patience! It is definately not intended for quickies! Have a little patience, & I'm sure you'll get what you want. If you don't have patience, then WinMX is probably not for you.

    Ehhhhh....

I've been using WinMX for over a year now, I know the little quirks and snags it has. I know how queing works, I'm not new to filesharing. What my big problem is WinMX is somehow killing my internet connection. Like I said in my previous post, I can actually see my speeds drop from 30kbps to zero in a matter of seconds. I have to restart my computer because my intenet connection is dead. Completely. No email, newsgroups, web pages, nothing. All I want to know is why and how to fix it.

Maybe SkorchedHeads could help you out better than I can. He seems to be the expert on WinMX. Or try this Link.

I'm using Windows 98SE. I have AVG anti-virus software, and I have ZoneAlarm, but I don't use it when I use WinMX (causes crashes when they both run). I have a Linksys LNE100tx (version 4) LAN card, use a Linksys switch and a BestData cable modem. I really think the problem lies within WinMX. See, I'll be doing a bunch of things at once, or, just WinMX, and my internet connection will suddenly die. And that only happens when I'm using WinMX. The only way to get back online is to restart my pc, and that is such a pain in the ass (takes forever).

:wings I know this is a dumb question, but how much ram do you have? Note this version of mx is better than the betas were, but it still uses more ram than the old version. If this is the problem, you might try a program to free up some memory, such as maxmemi. Hope this helps.

I've got 256 Megs of ram, and right now with WinMX running I've still got 73% of my resources free.

The reason I asked was I am running 98se also, I had a stick 256, and one of 128, and I had to use a program to free up memory with that much. Now I run 2 sticks of 256, and with Winmx running uploads at 35k, I have 83% free.

@arizonaheatstroke > your problem may be due to the combination of your linksys NIC and a primary connection. Try a secondary connection or another NIC (not a Netgear).

    Thumbs down

I would try another NIC, but I just can't afford one right now. As for using a secondary connection, umm, no. Why would I want to compromise download speed? I have a cable modem, with superfast speeds (test regularly on dslreports), why would I want to downgrade?

:wings Please use secondary, primary will kill you. Many people have had problems with this. You will get more results the way you are now, but the speed of your downloads will be down, also you are using resources that you may not be able to afford. It is worth a try.

Definitely use secondary, primary will just kill your bandwith so there is no point. Secondary is perfect for you.

I feel your pain....and it is real!!!!

    arizonaheatstroke....I feel your pain!

You are not alone in this or imaging things. Although, if yall ever have this problem it will drive you to fire up a big "doobie" , just so you can mellow out enough to keep from throwing the whole system out in the front yard. As you can guess, I, also am suffering from being disconnected from my ISP, because of WinMX.

Now, surely me and old arizonaheatstroke aren't the only ones that have ever had this problem. So, some of yall experts give us some help, here! The switch to a "secondary" might help him (I doubt it), but it sure ain't gonna help me, cause that's all that I use. This problem goes far beyond something that simple. And as far as connections, I see people everyday that download from me that just drag (28K and yes, overloaded DSL's), but they hang in there 'til the bitter end.

I don't know exactly what he has going on, but it really sounds like my problem too (or close, anyway). As Ricky Ricardo would say, "Let me splain".

It is a problem that has shown itself in 2 different ways.

First Problem: I notice all of my uploads and downloads go "red". All disconnected! I try to go to my home page...nothing! I try to go to other sites like Excite.com..."Page can't be displayed". According to my computer, I am still connected at 50.333K. Oh really? If that is the case, then why can't I go anywhere?

Second Problem: Downloads and uploads will run as good as they ever have on dial up, but when I try to go anywhere else on the net....it is dead. I can't go anywhere. I get "page cant' be displayed". It's like I was off-line!

Either, of the above cases is the "kiss of death"! It's one of those deals where it ain't a want to...it's a have to. Oh yeah, you're gonna RE-BOOT. Or just sit there and twittle your thumbs.

So what is the deal here? If I am cut-off, it ought to be ..."BAM". Everything is down. I could understand that, but this is really weird. My ISP shows me still wide open. But in a polite Alabama term, "Ain't shit happening"

I also run Windows 98, 198 ram, and am stranded on a 56K dial up for at least the next couple of months. Cable is on the way! Thank, The Good Lord!

Don't know how my computer is gonna react to Cable. Yall have got to understand that this is a computer that has lived a sheltered life in North West, Alabama. I've got the feeling that it is gonna want to sniff the cable's ass before it hooks up with it....Smile!

Thanks for any help that yall can give! This really is a problem that exists. I'm surprised that someone hasn't mentioned it before. And I thank arizonaheatstroke, for bringing it up!

    Thanks for past favors!

    Ed
