Giganews is good for retention etc buts theres the whole US Usenet provider scenario going on ATM

I use my ISP's (virgin) free service- retention sucks at 7 days but speeds good and multipart binaries are more complete than my paid account was giving me

I use Giganews myself (w/SSL). As for free providers, I don't have a recommendation. Access through my ISP (Cox) is lousy.

I use Usenet-News and buy blocks of service. Most people don't realize how little they download from the servers. A block of 100 gigs should be more than enough for most people for a year. Go to Slyck and click on their Guide to News Groups. It was where I got started. There is a list of all of the Servers both free and paid. News groups are the logical progression from P2P. There are no seeding requirements and no worry with RIAA and MPAA. Keep in mind that you do have a free server, it is provided by your ISP- whoever you are with. They all offer newsgroups. It is probably nttp.whoeverisyourisp.

But the real key to new groups is the news reader. It can tury a bad news server into a decent server. AI use NewsRover and I recommend it to everyone. You can download a trial version at Slyck. I think NewsRover is great- I tried the free and then I bought it. I used it with the Windstream free news server and even the free server was not that bad. But with Usenet-News it really opens up.

I guess that makes me the minority. I could go through 30GB in a couple of days.

I never realized how little I had used in the last year (since 07/30/07) until I just went and checked. I thought my block was almost gone, but I have 86 gigs left on it.

Thumbs up Giganews is my favorite

Giganews has the longest binary retention of 240 days (as of this posting). This means you have access to files that have been posted up to 240 days in the past.

I agree that there are cheaper providers, but if you are a big downloader, you should have a provider that can keep up with you.

Also you can view and compare a whole list of providers at topusenet.com and find the one that best suites your needs.

You dont need a long retention as long ag as your a guy who knows what they want.. If i havent downloaded something within 2 days of it being posted. I wont be downloading it. Sometimes my friends will request stuff but rarely has it been over 200 days. Max is like 60-70 days. Otherwise i use private bt to download it if the retention is horrible. Again so many pars are posted its rare it cant be fixed.
