Nope, never felt I had a good reason to start. Why does anyone start smoking anyway?

To look cool? I know in reality it doesn't at all, but to kids it does.
Or how 'bout this one? Prescribed as a child to treat hyper activity, along with coffee?

I just recently turned 40, and I've been smoking 36 years.

I was part of a study done in the early 70's. It was discovered that caffeine and nicotine had a calming effect on hyperactive children, and my well meaning but misguided mother decided that would be a better way to go than to put me on ritalin.
So from kindergarten thru 3rd grade I had cigarettes and coffee given to me under supervision.
3 times a day at school I went to the principal's office and had a cup of joe and a smoke with her. Once a day before school and twice a day after school I had coffee and cigarettes with my parents.
I smoked Tareytons, as they had a charcoal filter that supposedly removed most of the tar.

They ended the study when I was in third grade, due to detrimental health issues, like 10 year olds getting lung cancer or emphysema, chronic bronchitis, even strokes.

By then I was of course hooked, and after they took away my smokes I just started buying them from machines until I looked old enough to buy them myself at stores.

I've tried hundreds of times to quit, with no long term success yet.
I'm almost done reading "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking", at which point I'll quit again, hopefully this time for good.

Assuming your not bsing, whoever guided your parents on that treatment were idiots. If smoking truly was effective, then the active ingredient that calms the child should of been isolated and used, rather then the entire smoke. Anyway, sorry to hear you were given such a shitty addiction.

Yeah that would be Dr. Bruer, who ended his family practice shortly after the study went tits up for a lucrative career with RJ Reynolds. And I completely agree with you, and also wish very much it were bullshit. Although to be fair, outside of family and friends who actually witnessed my 'treatments', everyone else calls bullshit too.

I can buy a cuban cigar anytime I want, here in canada, but they're not cheap.

If you want to call that smoking, I guess I smoke a cuban or two in a year. I do love a good cigar. I also inhale very little.

It's cigarettes I was hooked on badly. I can't see me ever going back to those.

I picked up that nasty habit in '97 and quit around '02. I don't think smokers realize just how awful the stench is. I've got a neighbor that chain smokes. The dude goes out on the balcony just about every 20 minutes and the smoke goes right through my bedroom window every damn time.
