I've been trying to properly install since v7.04 but wasn't able to get the proper drivers for my 8600 gts. I was told with 7.10 that this problem was fix but now with 7.10 the system just locks at a blank black screen. I'm not exactly sure what's causing the problem. any ideas?
Hi sorry I cannot help you because I don't have any idea about Ubuntu locking computer.
Good luck!

If I knew the first thing about it, I would surely try to help.
You can also go here (I pm'ed one link)-
http://www.linuxquestions.org/
and look for "rocket357."
He, or any of his knowledgeable friends (Jeremy, or any other mods) should be able to help (sorry about the bold. Happens when copy/pasting).
Maybe have a look here, as well.

Aww...I was *referred* to? Umm, I dunno what to say...haha.
OP: 8600 gts is (to my knowledge) a bit buggy as of yet. I'm assuming you have the nvidia binary driver installed?
Try this in a terminal:
user@host ~ $ grep -A 8 "Section \"Device\"" /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and make sure the line that says "Driver" has "nvidia" after it. If it does, then do this:
user@host ~ $ lsmod | grep nvidia
and make sure it comes back with something like this:
nvidia <some_big_number> <some_small_number> <blank_or_some_text>
If the first command doesn't say nvidia, run the second one to make sure the driver is even loaded (it should be, but if it is NOT loaded, you can run "modprobe nvidia" in a terminal (as root) to load it manually).
Ubuntu should take care of all that stuff automatically, but just make sure Ubuntu didn't screw up somewhere along the way.

Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate you not nuking me on sight haha. (That's intended as a joke...please don't take it otherwise).
I'm over all that nonsense. *there* was a lost cause. Hopefully *here* is NOT. I've built a bit of a reputation at linuxquestions.org...I'll use that as my place to blow off steam if I get frustrated heh.
Let's get something straight...I hold no grudge against you, nor do I intend on going into battle against you again. It's just not worth the pain heh. In all seriousness, though, let's play cool, shall we? I just want to spread the "gospel" of open source, nothing more, nothing less. Oh, and I just want to help Linux newbies get past the first few bumps in the linux learning curve =)
